Description A very random submission I know.. but let me explain.

Back when I was like 5-6 I really loved construction machines and stuff, and robots. I used to rent the movie Ferngully just so I could see the awesome Leveler. The reason I drew it now is because I recently found out they have the whole movie on youtube, while watching it I found that I STILL think the leveler looks awesome. XD I would never even watch that movie if the leveler wasnt in it.. I'm not into the faggity fairy stuff.. even though Crysta is pretty hot..

This was much harder to draw then I thought it would be.. It's very geometrically critical since in the movie it was computer modeled. But I think it came out.. ok.

If you live under a rock.. take the spaces out of the link there.. I had to put them in cuz the stupid smiles mess it up..

http:// www. youtube.com/watch?v= PpLZBrEPWyQ

Gotta love that evil theme it's got XD

I realy like this drawing of the leveler. it is damn rare to find anything at all of this machine. So keep it up mate! Me myself have been trying to recreate it [link]

I know, it IS very rare.. I like to give things that don't get much to any attention...attention. It's a cool feeling drawing something no one else draws.

Damn... this is a good drawing of such a complex-looking machine. Have you ever wondered if it would be practical for real? I have since I first saw the movie.

Thank you, I've loved this machine since I was a kid, the only real reason I ever used to rent the VHS from the movie store. XD

Now that's a very interesting question, I like it. I think the measure of it being practical would rely on several elements. One: How much does it cost to build on, Two: How much does it cost to move one to the logging site, Three: Does maintenance and Fuel costs come out lower then the cost of paying workers to do the same thing.

The Leveler in the movie was a pretty impressive machine, the robots in the arms, the mechanics inside that automatically sawed the lumber into planks, ect. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those cost a LOT. However I doubt it had very good fuel economy, being so bulky and having so many moving parts. The moving parts themselves probably required a lot of maintenance.

But honestly the biggest factor is cost for the company (whatever logging company it was) and if it cost them less money to use a Leveler then a fleet of workers with chainsaws. It seems almost redundant since a fleet of workers is still needed regardless just to mark the trees. There's also a shot in the movie showing some men loading logs onto a semi-truck.. almost like they're doing it the old fashion way even WITH the leveler.

So honestly.. it's hard to say. I will say that they didn't seem to be employing the Leveler in a practical way. They should have not even had people marking trees at all.. saves money not having to pay them doing so.

XD I will say though, Tony and Mack (the two operators inside the Leveler) sure had a sweet job! The leveler seemed to mostly operate itself, meanwhile those two got to sit around in an air conditioned cab eating and reading comics. XD

Huh... good point. Since loggers nowadays still use feller bunchers, which are less than 15 feet tall, to fell trees, the Leveller doesn't have any real life use. It would be really awesome if someone made a replica that worked much like the one in the movie, albeit with saws that were only capable of cutting down crops.

I guess maybe one advantage could be size and the size of it's treads. It could allow it to simply drive over things like rivers and the like and little bushes/trees.

CarlosMunez88 In reply to Half-dude [2011-07-18 06:17:24 +0000 UTC]

Well... I can imagine that the Leveller's only weakness would be steep slopes. Even if it has the same engine/electric motor setup that diesel electric locomotives have (which would be the most efficient), I'd think that engine would struggle if the slope is more than 30 degrees. So the only area this machine could really work in would be a forest in a valley. So, yes... it is utterly awesome... but still rather impractical.

PS- as for the price of building one... since feller bunchers cost maybe $300,000 each, the Leveller might cost maybe $9,000,000 or more to build and maybe $8,000 a year to maintain. That doesn't cover fuel, though. Its fuel economy would probably be equal to a diesel electric locomotive.

I thank you so, so much for debating this with me, Half-dude.

Half-dude In reply to CarlosMunez88 [2011-07-18 09:54:08 +0000 UTC]

True, I could see slopes being a problem, maybe they have tow cables attached to the thing so that a few trucks or whatnot could be used to help it up hills? That's a question by itself..how is it delivered to the site? Does it come in sections and put together? Kind of like those big construction cranes?

I'm pretty sure it uses a gas chugging diesel engine, being an environmentalist film at heart they made sure to show that the leveler was polluting too. If you remember, the first time Crysta see's the leveler it's off in the distance and all you see is a large smoke plume.. which she mistakes for something else.

You kidding? I love debating sh*t like this! XD

BTW, for the sake of research: [link]

"You kidding? I love debating sh*t like this! XD"

OK... So yes, this machine is utterly awesome, but still impractical. A small-scale replica would be more than enough to bring joy to any Leveller fan, I'm sure (including myself). How about you?

Reminds me actually, back when I thought Santa was real and that presents didn't have to coincide with what's available in stores I remember asking for a toy version of the Poacher's truck from Rescuers Down Under. I used to watch that movie about the same time I used to watch Ferngully and I used to love both those vehicles. : P

Cool. Someone once commented somewhere on the 'net asking of its dimensions. Based on the movie footage alone, I estimate that it's approximately 60 feet high, 100 feet wide at the tracks and maybe 200 feet long from those shoulders in front of the cab (not counting the arms) to the rear panel.

PS - Do you think I small-scale replica with real working arms and saws would be utterly awesome?

LOL I was thinking more along the lines of saplings. But it would merely be a project to make Leveller fans squee more than anything.

For an attempt to draw something mechanical, and the leveler of all things, it was a job well done if you like i can point you in the direction of more inspirational mech-like machines in movies of hand drawn and 3d animation. A very, very good example of that which that i have mentioned is the movie Steamboy. i assure you that that movie contains all the mechanical devices that you could not possibly get anywhere else. Mind you, that if you are going to watch it make sure it is in English not japanese.

Ooh, the Leveler. I saw that movie in Dutch, it was pretty cool and practically the only cartoon-like movie my mother likes.

Love the details, I wouldn't ever be able to draw machinery like that, hehe. XD;; But I guess that just takes practice. Oh, well.
