Please avoid a manual install and use the GNOME Tweak Tool, it's much easier.
You can use the gnome-shell theme extension for easier switching of themes. Unzip the file and load which version you want into the gnome tweak tool, i.e Ubuntu-Ambiance-3.2.zip
GNOME Tweak Tool
Make sure you have user-theme-extension installed. Load the GNOME Tweak Tool and go to Shell Extensions and click the "Use Theme Extension" switch. Now go to Theme>Shell Theme and click the box and locate your theme zip. Now you can select the theme in the dropdown box.

This doesn't seem to provide theming for window title bars. How do I get those changed to look like ambiance?

Am I to assume this doesn't work for GNOME-Shell 3.1x and eventual 3.2?

As I understand, it breaks the themes with 3.1 so I'll have to update them.

Major bummer! Certainly there's the new user menu for a start.

After applying these theme the windows decoration starts to looks terrible. Has anybody else experienced this? I believe this is more a problem with the gtk theme more than the gnome-shell theme but I figured you guys may have some tips.

You might want to check to see if you have the gnome-theme installed for GNOME3.

I was able to work around the issue by installing Adwaita but I was hoping to get a more ubuntu feeling theme on here. I guess i'll have to do some more digging.

The answer to my initial inquiry is that gnome-shell requires a gtk3.x theme. I was able to find an Ambiance look like (default ubuntu gtk2.x theme) here: [link]
Looks like you're the author of the comment on that page, half-left.

I've never been a fan of the Ubuntu themes, but this looks great as a shell theme.
Definitely gonna try this one out!

So far, one of my favorite Gnome Shell themes. The only gripe I have with it is that it doesn't play nice with the Dock extension - all that's there is pretty much a list of icons on the side; no way of telling what or how many windows I have open. That aside, though, it really is a great theme.

Thank you. Not sure about the dock extension though.

I like it a lot, except for the messaging tray at the bottom. It looks good in your thumbnail and probably good on larger screens, but my laptop does not have a very large screen. The hard edge just seems too abrupt and for whatever weird reason it makes the desktop feel cramped, I like the fade that the default theme has. Though this is definitely a subjective complaint, so worth about a grain of sand. Everything else is excellent.

Thanks. Yeah, I did do a small screen theme but it's a lot of work do do for all themes.

I don't know if you did something different, or if the version of gnome shell I have is what fixed it, but this is the first theme that has been readible and that HASN'T crashed when I click the top right icons. Either way thank you for another awesome theme XD

Moved the gs-ubuntu-ambiance-dark/gnome-shell to /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme, I see all the theme files in Nautilus but if I restart the shell or the PC, my current shell theme, Adwaita, is still active. I'll try asap with another Gnome-Shell theme to check if the problem is on my own PC.

Make the the folder inside "gnome-shell" is called "theme" and then copy it to /usr/share/gnome-shell/. The GNOME Tweak Tool is easier to manage themes.

Tried to switched from the Drakfire theme and it doesn't work. Don't know why, my shell always restarts with the Drakfire theme, no way to activate this one.

Very nice desktop! Any chance of using Blackbox as your window manager so you can do a style for it?

Thanks. No I don't use blackbox. You're welcome to make a style based off it though.
