Description
And now for something completely different:Hexafusion, themed "Cute Magic Users";
merging the Dark Magician Girl (from Yu-Gi-Oh), Shantae (from the corresponding video-games) and Merry Nightmare (from the Anime Yumekui Merry)
You can check out the individual Fusions here:
It's pretty rare (in fact: singular) that I really give memes like this a go, but the Hexafusion really caught my interest in the past week. Though, obviously, the meme has been going around quite a while already.
My thought process went from "Meh, I don't really care for this meme" to "Wow, it's pretty cool what fusions people come up with" and then to actually debating whether I should give it a go myself. It then turned into "Well, I don't think I have good ideas for it". But as I started entertaining thoughts of what characters I'd like to see fused, the ideas just didn't stop coming
In fact, I have at least 2 more Hexafusions I really want to do. But we'll see how my interest for that holds up.
The fact that they are all magic users of some sort is probably a low common denominator (Merry can control the gate to the dream-world, so that should still count
You can check out the other Hexafusions I did, too:

You mean Dark Magician Girls' arrow?
I mean, I added it to her Magician Dancer-Fusion, but I didn't find it very usable on other instances.

Depends on the suggestion
But as far as Hexafusions go, I honestly have a good deal of ideas already.

Shantae sure looks like she sticks out like a sore thumb. Dark Magician Girl and Merry Nightmare are Japanese creations, and Shantae herself is an American creation. Imagine if you showed these to someone who was a big Japan buff and he would have a hard time guessing which one ISN'T Japanese.

and he would have a hard time guessing which one ISN'T Japanese.
=> unless I missed the irony, it seems strange to say "Shantae doesn't fit in, but a Japanase probably couldn't tell the difference."
Either way, I feel Shantae looks plenty manga-esque, so her american origin has no impact for me, personally.
You're free to disagree.

For a long time, the art direction of Shantae really bothered me. I wished for a design that would appeal to both Japanese and Americans. I know the one she has now does that in some way (especially the one you used for the hexafusion), but I believe it's NOT enough for Shantae games to be released in Japan.
Currently, I've been pondering of redesigning her myself; I would give her cutesy manga-esque facial features, but the rest of her body would be reminiscent of cartoons from the late 20's/early 30's, such as Mickey Mouse. Having a mix of both is guaranteed to bring Shantae overseas for an Asian audience, in addition to her American one.

I see.
I don't think it's necessary for Wayforward to tap into the japanese market specifically or make Shantae particularly known over there.
The games were not exactly well known to begin with, but since the kickstarter for Half-Genie-Hero, the publicity has grown pretty much globaly.

I still would not count on the "globally" part just yet. We'll have to wait and see if my hopes are a reality.
If WayForward doesn't feel comfortable making Shantae games specifically for Japanese gamers, they could have someone else do it, like Nintendo, for example. I've always predicted that someday Nintendo will buy WayForward. People always ask them to buy back Rare, but because Microsoft turned Rare into nothingness these days, I figured I would get a company that has closer ties with WayForward. And yes, even closer than Capcom. Sue me.

I started with a digital sketch for each one, printed them out and drew clean lines over it.
Then, scan it back in and add digital colors - first base color, then shades, then little light effects.

I usually use MangaStudio for the drawing/coloring and Photoshop for corrections and color adjustements.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and tell me. A lot of people on here just straight up ignore questions like this because they don't want other people to start using the same programs as them
π: 0 β©: 1
HallowGazer In reply to XxZanpakutoXx [2014-09-06 23:06:13 +0000 UTC]
It may not be that they don't want you to use the same programs - thought some probably do have this prehistoric mindset. But other people (especially on the more popular end) surely get more comments and the same questions over and over again.
Then again, I can only speak for myself here, and I do have the time to answer whatever questions may fly my way XD

I feel what you are saying, but I have had people just give me a generic response.
I actually had a conversation that went like this.
Me: What did you use to make this?
Other person: A photo creator/editing program
Me: Which one?
Other person: Google is your friend
Me: .....
