Description More from Moth and Flame's story - Ms Spider, the much revered widow who also resides within the People's house. She ate her husband, and all but the youngest of her spiderlings have left home. No-one in the garden really likes her much (they don't really get spider culture, they just think she ate her hubby), though really she's a modest, wise creature and a loving mother.

She's no great fan of the moths though. Why? What role does she play in the lives of the Moth and the Flame? You'll just have to wait and see.

Unless I've already told you the story, of course.

Watercolour and ballpoint pen. Character designs and art copyright Han Mosley, please do not reuse.

That's actually kinda cute in a weird sorta way. I like the victorian style of clothing you put on them.

I love this one. Its very interesting. The thing I like the most is actually the umbrella. I want one like that. Great job.

I've got an idea for an anthropomorphized bug comic, except it's a western! Unfortunatly, the only characters I've come up with are the sheriff and the traveling circus ringleader/con-man, who are named Miguel O'Morff and Beetle Barnum, respectfully. I wonder if any of you can guess what Miguel O'Morff is?

: ), went through your gallery again and thought i'd comment on this one this time. its a very cute picture except for the unbrella -> the umbrella makes Ms. Spider look incredibly scary, or at least that she has the potential to be so. without the umbrella, this would be a much different picture i think.

How adorable...incredibly creative! I love their outfits...the Widow looks so upright and proper, even though you can barely read expression on her face. All of it is the posture and how she holds her arms and legs...it looks really awesome

hallu In reply to soltian [2004-09-27 21:35:51 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou!
The widow is TERRIBLY prim and proper. She'd be glad to know her posture is proper for a lady of her stature. XD

I've already got a soft spot for spiders.... like many others might have mentioned, it came from reading James and the Giant Peach...

I like the back story behind this one though.... she has this air of mystery and wisdom, even in character design alone. she seems stylish and groomed and elegant too, like a rich widow from the 1900s or victorian era may have been... I think it's the style of clothing and her hair style that makes me see that, she dows appear to have a very victorian-esque look to her...

I am completely in love with the way you coloured this... your skill with watercolour here is just fantastic... it has all these subtle tones and shading in places, and yet is striking in others... like the red in her sleeves and the yellow of her eyes...

I really cannot wait to see the moth story when you finish it... I will be a little angel in story heaven...

Oh, I love Roald Dahl's Miss Spider, she's lovely. Very big inspiration.

And I'm relieved you get the well-groomed Victorian widow type vibes from her, that's JUST the type of character she is. I'm currently designing her a bluebottle fly butler. XD

"Step into my parlor," said the Spider to the Fly.

My fable has a golden Dragonfly. Which makes me love this even more. Bugs are perfect for fables, both are so simplistic. But then it makes me sad because you pull it off so much better than I do X D

You just gave me the greatest mental image of Ms Spider having a manservant Fly! XD

The golden dragonfly sounds lovely, I'm very interested in the sounds of your fable - think you'll be posting anything to do with it on DA?

I was browsing and came across this, something about it caught my ey,e its so sweet and very clever. I love their legs and their eyes, i shall never think of spiders the same way again, cause perhaps thats what they really look like....well what they should look like at least.

Nice use of shading, great choice of colours.
