Description "Too far behind enemy lines for retrieval. Situation too dangerous to risk further lives and resources to attempt rescue. Delay Separatist forces as long as possible"

That's what the message from command said. They were going to abandon us there to die, hoping we'd slow the Separatists down long enough for some other unit to swoop in grab the hostile VIP's and project materials and bug out. All part of the job, right?

We were supposed to delay an incoming Separatist assault force of unknown size with two gunships, two TX-130 Saber-class fighter tanks and thirty three troopers. Didn't matter that we were dangerously low on ammunition and there to provide security for a group of medical volunteers giving aid to civilians injured during the fighting. Our lives are expendable, been told that since they took us out of the pods on Kamino, but civilians? Aid workers? Children? The Lieutenant gave the order to prep the the wounded for evac, said they didn't need to know that none was coming, said that giving them hope was kinder than telling them the truth.

The droids didn't discriminate between civilian and trooper, they just started shelling the building and firing rockets at us. One hit the wall I was taking cover behind and threw me across the room. Right before I blacked out I saw the Lieutenant get hit as he popped up to come get me. When I woke up I was on a stretcher on board a Venator class star destroyer being tended to by medics from the 184th. I didn't know what the hell was going on but I couldn't move.

"udesii! Easy, easy, You're gonna be fine. You took a blow to the head and you have some shrapnel near your spine, we can take it out no problem. I'll send your brothers in, I can give you ten minutes then we've got to get you into surgery"

All I could see was the ceiling above me but I heard footsteps and armour plates clacking as my brothers entered the room. They looked like they'd been through hell, covered in scratches bruises and blaster burns. They filled me in on what happened after I had lost consciousness. The other unit we'd been ordered to buy time for hadn't taken kindly to the news that a field hospital was being sacrificed just so they could snatch some high profile Seps and came to get us. Apparently command had ordered them to leave us and jump out of system with their prisoners but their CO had used some colourful Mandalorian phrases to explain how that wasn't going to happen. The 184th had blasted the droid column from orbit then airlifted us out and had set course for Coruscant. The civvies and what was left of our platoon were going to the GAR barracks for treatment and debrief while the 184th were being reassigned.

"Time's up, gotta get you into surgery now... unless you like not being able to move? No? Right then, you lads get yourselves seen to. By the time we're done with him he'll be good as new, you can pick him up from the med bay in the barracks."

I tried the fight the anaesthesia long enough to ask someone to tell their CO thank you but those were some powerful drugs.

"No need, ner'vod, we don't leave people behind"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully that makes sense, if it doesn't I apologise, I kept getting distracted and forgot the back story I'd thought up.
Couldn't think of any clone units besides the 212th, 187th or Neyo's troops then a quick google search brought up the 442nd and they didn't seem to do much so I thought I'd stick them in. Sorry if they're your favourite unit but most of them survived

This is stunningly accurate about the reality of any soldier's life.

Oh it's so gloriously realistic and gritty! It's no glorified warfare, this is gritty and gives you a taste of what it's like for a clone. Also I love the way you design clones to look more tactically plausible and efficient. They have proper gear, not just armor (which doesn't do much tbh).

Thank you I thought they could do with some better kit and also give people a look what it's like for soldiers when the fighting is over.

How has it taken me so long to comment on this?  Great job on more clone-y goodness, my friend!  Your mini-fics are always so fun.  The 184th to the rescue!  I loved that.  It's fun to explore that line the clones have to toe between their innate need to follow orders and that strong brotherhood/loyalty quality that was also bred into them so thoroughly.  The rule is that they do what command says, but the exceptions (like this one) do a great job of proving that they're men, not droids, after all.

Love all the little details, as always.  The scuffs and bandages show these boys have really been through hell, but what really captures that is the thousand yard stare on the clone second from the left and the pose and expression of the guy on the ground.  Also, ditto what DC said about the med-droid column behind the table.  Nice detail.

Thank you After two years of fighting and far too many avoidable casualties the troopers are getting a little tired of walking that line, they are indeed men and they are getting restless. Their detour to rescue their brothers, while not an outright act of disobedience, is close enough to cause concern which leads to the two Jedi being assigned to work with them. Their ability to think and react gives them an advantage over droids but they aren't supposed to think about their orders, that's just won't do.

It was originally going to be medics working on the troopers in a gunship as they airlifted out but that would require me to look up references and I've seen more than enough pictures of soldiers missing pieces.

Ah, interesting to get the backstory on why your two Jedi characters end up with the 184th later in the war.  Such a fun fish-out-of-water scenario you came up for those two.

I would still love to see a larty airlift medic scene, but it would indeed be a tough one.  Such close quarters inside the gunship's crew bay.  You'd either have to go with a really tight perspective (almost as if we're looking through a trooper's visor) or do the cut-away take where you can see through the larty's roof.  It'd be fun if you do ever decide to give it another go.

I've had a sketch idea pinned to my wall for months, more of a doodle that looked like it could go somewhere, that's pretty much a med-evac. Troopers carrying the wounded towards a landing gunship while the rest provide cover. If only I had and knew how to use digital software and tablets.

Before I'd even seen AOTC I fell in love with the gunships. Seeing the trailer and them swooping over the battlefield was just awesome for kid me but in the 16 years since it came out I still haven't been able to get them right, it's still fun trying though.

Sounds like a great premise.  I'm sure you could pull it off, but I hear ya about lack of access and experience with the new digital art world.  Have you ever taken any kind of class for that sort of thing?

I've long been in love with larties too.  There are a lot of things about AotC that weren't awesome, but all of those scenes on Geonosis of those birds just absolutely wrecking Sep hardware were very well executed.  I loved flying them around in the old PS2 Battlefront game as well as in that lame "The Clone Wars" game for the Xbox.  I took special pleasure writing all of Lieutenant Lock's LAAT/i piloting scenes in Containment, too.  So much fun coming up with new ways for them to blow droids up with one of the bazillion weapons those larties sport.

I signed up to a course that was supposed to involve digital art and learning how to use tablets but it turned out to be a lie to sell the whole thing.

So many fond memories of the old Battlefront games, rappelling out of them in Republic Commando was fun too.

Ah, that's annoying.  Probably all too common with those kinds of classes, too.

Yes, I loved that in the RC game.  It was also fun when you find a crashed gunship and could hop into the bubble turret to blast some droids.  Too bad there was never a Halo-esque portion of a mission where you got to man the turret in a flying gunship en-route to a new location, though.  That would have been epic.  How did we never get an RC 2 game?!

I'm still hoping for a sequel with Omega squad making an appearance and some closure on what happened to Sev. Hell, even a sequel following a whole new squad would be good enough for me.

Agreed.  Any RepCom sequel done in the spirit of the original would be loads of fun.  I'll always be a bit sad the opportunity to get it made back when Legends still reigned has come and gone.  It would have been so much fun if Traviss had been hired on as a writer (like she was with the Gears books and Gears 3).  All the little references they could have included to the RC novels and Legends Clone Wars in general would have been a dream come true.  But I've beat myself up down that dead end road before...

They were only in trouble because of the 184th and it would've been rude not to help them out

This is so good.  Great story, wonderful drawing.  I really love that blue bot in the background, very star warsy.

Such poignant and relevant themes - not just for Star Wars, but about choices and priorities.
