Description Two newly commissioned Iraqi lieutenants hug after they graduated from the year-long academy.

It was hard to find a dry Iraqi eye in the whole place after they graduated. Overcome with emotion, most of the lieutenants starting crying - some balling.

Reminds me of when I graduated Survival School. Ninety-nine percent of Americans will never know what certain soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines have gone through for the U.S.

I think war is absolutly pointless, but this picture is really touching. I think I'm starting to cry... Yep... theres a tear right now...

Why can't we just live in peace as one insted of making war and being devided by race or religion? This picture make me keep what little faith I have in humanity alive.

Beautiful shot, there's so much emotion captured in this.
An example of true brotherhood, right here. Brothers in arms, that is.

Why can't people keep their annoying comments to themselves. These guys are doing their job and deserve nothing but respect.

I don't see why people argue over this photo. It's not a controversal photo to do that with.

It's moving, and I like that. Although I don't care for war and believe this one should ahve been over quite some years ago, it's not, and it's still nice to see something touching in all of this.

I hope those graduates lead troops well and make their families proud <3

"A man may die for a good friend, or what he believes is truth, but no man will ever die for what he knows is a lie." These are men and women who believe that there is something worth preserving in their nation. No matter what you think of this war, if you can't respect the motivation of these men and women, you are showing them disrespect. Of course they are still just as human as anyone else and prone to shortcomings, but maybe you could go ask a marine or army personal or any unit of the military why they are willing to die. I guarantee not one will answer you, "Because I want to keep putting money in some guy's pocket."

This's true
I've been told that when it comes down to that moment you're being shot at, you're fighting for yourself and the guy next to you. If bullets are flying over your head, aimed to hit it, you're not thinking "I'll get them, for cheap oil!"

northwulf In reply to Cutting-Edge [2008-03-20 01:14:49 +0000 UTC]

dont missunderstand me ( my english is also quite bad ).
I really respect your soldiers, really i do. My grandfather was also one, he fought against the Reich as a part of the Carinthian Partizans (communists and catholics) the only successful resistance group on the territory of the Reich itselfs. I m also not a pacifist or something like that. I know that i need to fight at least to protect myself. But i also think that a man can be misslead and blended by leaders. No one of your soldiers think "I fight for oil" - they fight for their country. But their country do not fight for them but just for oil. I hope you understand me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BillyZepher In reply to northwulf [2008-03-20 02:26:26 +0000 UTC]

I believe I understand you, but I'm afraid I'm still not convinced. If we're just fighting this war for oil then we suck so very hard at accomplishing goals. Oil is still in the hands of giant corporations who aren't loyal to any one nation and I think all of America is just about ready to find an alternate energy solution. To be honest, I'm really not sure what this whole war is even about anymore, but I do recognize that even if going in was a mistake, we're there now trying to do the best we can. I still don't think it was wrong to take a man who commits genocide out of power. If all of this turns out well in the long term, I think the history books will sing a different tune. Same thing has happened with every war depending on the outcome.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

northwulf In reply to BillyZepher [2008-03-20 09:17:14 +0000 UTC]

you are right. Oil is in the hands of big corporations who just want to make money. But today the US government is such a corporation or at least it lives in synergy with such corporations. I do not think that america tries to find a alternate energy solution, really hard. Because: If they would invested the same amount of money in this alternate power sources as they invested into the war we would have an appropriate power source today.
And yes i agree, that you need to do the best of this situation in iraq now. But this will be a hard way, i think.
I also agree ;D, that "killing" (or better arresting) sadamm was right. But Americas secret agencys can kill a man without a invasion. And after Sadamms death there wouldnΒ΄t be a greater chaos then now.
I hope the history books will sing a different tune, and that iam wrong with my appraisal. But i donΒ΄t really believe it.
(No army in the world can fight effectiv against guerillas with are supported by the population - Vietnam, Russia-Afganistan, WWII, some places in south america, RussianRevolution and so on)

While I'm still in disagreement with you about a few things, I can respect your view after you have explained it. Just remember, pithy and quick sayings may be fun to say, but they won't ever adequately explain how you feel about a subject.

I won't keep this discussion going since I think we could keep it going forever, but thanks for taking the time to explain your opinion.

"Ninety-nine percent of Americans will never know what certain soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines have gone through for the U.S."

Why go to war in the first place? It's ok, if someone attacked your country, but invading other countries, pretending to be a world cop and call it war for freedom is just crap. Everybody knows that the war in Iraq is for cheaper oil in the USA rather then it's for better life of people living in Iraq. USA bombed my country in 1999. and i'll never forget that. You can fool people who wouldn't know to name 50 world capitals, and can't tell the difference between Latin America and Latin language but the rest of the sane world knows the truth.

I just cant belive,we have so many nice things in this World, nature is everywere. And someone is posting some pictures of some war.And then they are telling us,they maybe thinking that we have level of inteligence of a average US citizen, that that war is for some good things.Well,i never joined here to discuss politics, this is not a place for that. But i must say some things.
I dont know who can belive that any war is good? You invaded other country,in other part of the
World, for the reasons that we all know very well. Those people dont have freedom, they cant walk free on street. That is your war from freedom? And then you post some pictures of great war,and we all should be very thankful for those soldiers,i feel so safe already. You created that mess, you live with it.
Just shallow minds,nothing more.

As Christopher said, "those who befriend me shall be befriended". You're arguing with someone who is no longer with us, who died for a cause helping the Iraqi people, whether or not you believe the "evil corporate americans" have another goal.. Show at least a shred of respect

You also seem to like to generalize, I know more than 50 world capitals, cities, countries, and I do know the difference between Latin America and the Latin Language.

Then this comment has nothing to do with you. I didn't intent to disrespect, i'm just sick and tired of hearing "great deads" US soldiers did in those countries that they invaded...pardon me, visited to "restore the order". There is nothing good in war, especially if it's fought for all the wrong reasons. Human life is too valuable to be wasted.

RIP Christopher

Not worthy? It's up to the people, not you, on what and what doesn't make it to a DD. Whether you like something or not does not matter, as people have their own tastes.

I think that you should be happy that someone has made another DD, as people work very hard to do what they do, especially when, like headbanana, has passed away recently. Their pictures are a living memory of them.
