Description

This was taken with my phone and although a good phone it doesn't do tooΒ well in dark rooms while taking video. For those who saw my visualization of Smaug, I'm happy to report that I was correct on knowing what Smaug looks like YAY Here you can compare my drawing with the pictures and see that he is a wyvern and VERY beautiful.

For those who were hoping that Smaug would be a four legged dragon? very sorry, but don't worry. Dragon, wyvern doesn't matter, he is still a great fire breather on screen, and I'm very critical when it comes to accuracy in games and films. You will be pleased on how they made him. Also he sounds a little different than in the trailers, but still very good.

I was originally disappointed when I saw he was a wyvern, but it quickly grew on me. Β I mean that snake-like design, and the way he did not so much walk as he did slither. Β It just sucked me right in.

It was the same with me to. They changed it I think to match with the motion capture that was made and recorded. They have said that the made Smaug resemble not only with the European culture, but Asia culture as well. I think they also said that J.R.R. Tolkien's stories mention dragons as having the title "worm," so that matches with the design to.Β

Not exactly a wyvern. Wyverns don't have claws on their wings.

Thanks for the pictures, since I saw the movie I search for Full-Body-Pictures of him, but even the Artbook had none, so thank you very much.
However, I was more then disappointed, that Smaug is a Wyvern. I know, there were a lot of signs, BUT there were still a lot lies they told us.
Why is he a Wyvern, when he was a Dragon in the first movie? Sure they changed some scenes in the Extended Edition, but there are still a lot, that are making no sense now.
For example grabbing the entrance, how he is suppose to do THAT as a Wyvern, with his hind leg? (I would love to see that, I've to admit)
Now about the lies, well on the movie posters you could clearly see a four-legged-dragon (The Smoke of Gandalf). On Thorin's Map you can see a four-legged-dragon and Weta (plus other shops) are selling pins and necklaces with four-legged-dragons and sometimes even call them Smaug!
He was the greatest Wyvern, I've seen in all my life, no doubt. However, I do not like how they handled it. Not to mention, that EVERY live-action-movie has Wyvern nowadays.
It would've been a pleasure to see a four-legged-dragon after all these movies, especially Smaug. Peter and Weta even described him as godfather of the modern dragons, more the godfather of modern Wyvern now.
No offense, this is of course just my opinion.

You are perfectly right! I went through that scene back and forward in slowmo and especially where Smaug tramples over all the dwarves you don't see any forelegs. JUst his head bobbing into the screen briefly from above. So what you see have to be his forepaws. Aside from the fact that these ought to be his forepaws just from the way they look with that thumb-claw.
I mean I felt totally in love with Smaug, but I agree with you here. Smaug should be a four-leged dragon and no wyvern.

Glad to hear that! I am really. Most people don't care that they changed Smaug into a Wyvern, but he was never meant to be.
He even was a four-legged-Dragon in the first movie and to change it after one year is just nonsense. Not to mention, that some or even many people will never own the Extended Edition.
Smaug IS awesome, but it's a big movie mistake that they made two versions for the same character in the same trilogy.

Same thing happened with Bolg. You see one version of him (briefly) in An Unexpected Journey (Dwalin headbutts him in the Battle for Moria) and now his appearance has changed for Desolation of Smaug

Yeah, I mean by no doubts that Smaug appearance on the screen left me awestruck with wet eyes and skipping heartbeats several times. But this sudden appearnce change was really unnessecary, imho. For I agree with you, there are already so much wyvern shaped dragons. I guess it's just easier and more convenient to make a 4 limbed creature than a 6 limbed one.

Karingan In reply to Azzurgil [2013-12-14 19:02:06 +0000 UTC]

Answer: Those weren't his front leg, they were his back legs. Wyverns are dragons too, they belong to the same family. European dragons are greedy, yes, but mostly with themselves, while Wyverns were known to be cold killers and hoarders of death. Making Smaug a fire drake and a Wyvern was a great choice, because Wyverns have longer necks and slither, which is more sinister than a bulky european dragon stalking around. I think they made the right idea.

Azzurgil In reply to Karingan [2013-12-14 19:12:48 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, but I disagree (I made a Journal with Gifs, where you can see it a lot better).
Smaug was drawn by Tolkien himself as a four-legged-dragon, on his map, which was used in the movie, he is also a four-legged-dragon
and most important, he WAS a four-legged-dragon in the first movie. They only changed it in the Extended Edition.
So I'm not complaining about the Wyvern!Smaug, but how they handled him. Seeing four-legged-dragons on posters, merchandise and in the first movie makes you think that you can expect on in the second movie aswell.

While it is true that the dragon on the map and original drawings were four-legged, it can be said that fear twisted the image. Smaug was not seen very well, nor for 60 years since the desolation, so I cut them some slack. It's certainly nothing to be too obsessed over anyway.

Honestly, I smiled while imaging this.
~While drawing the map. "Eh...Do you remember if Smaug had forelegs?" "I'm not sure...Just draw him some, nobody will check it."
Haha! No offense. It just was so tempting~
Still, some scenes in the first movie doesn't make sense anymore, it just feels weird.
Well well, can't change it...
