HappyPenguin819 β€” deviantART comment deletion feature

Description I think deviantART should give to users the ability to remove their own comments, as well as other comments on their profile, deviations, groups they manage and such by the following reasons:

- Annoying spam walls
- Being trolled or harassed online by what you write
- "Thanks for the fav" stuff. Some people just don't like their profiles to be full of them
- People falling for old comments
- etc..

Facebook has that ability, deviantART should have it too. The only thing I would add is that removed comments should keep "visible" to deviantART admins in the case the person is posting spam or abusive comments so that they can take action.

Don't forget you can use stamps even if you don't have a dA subscription -----------------> [link]

Maylilyx In reply to ZombiePsychologist [2013-09-29 14:34:54 +0000 UTC]

I haven't met one person who thought the "hidden by owner" bar you get when you hide someone's comment was pretty or nice in anyway. It's ugly and everytime I look at it it reminds me of the time I was harassed. Do you think I want to be reminded of that? Hiding it just hides the words. It does not hide the fact someone commented something bad. I want that bar to go away. Everyone does really. Maybe you've never had to hide a comment or maybe you did.

Also hiding is a useless feature when the bar is still there. Maybe the bar should at least not be there in public or there at all.Β

Β

Also, what makes you think that everybody would agree that the 'hidden comment' bar should be removed? What makes you think that you speak for the entirety of deviantArt saying that everybody wants the hide comment feature to be replaced?

Also obvious dAtartlet lol.

You seem to be quick to make assumptions about other people.

Β

You never did answer my question.

Β

If you hide it, you can't really see what the person said (unless you decide to click on it). Again, it's not best to keep thinking about them and just move on with your life.

Β

Why can't you understand that?

PrairieLily In reply to ZombiePsychologist [2013-09-29 17:28:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. She made two comments on things I said then blocked me so I couldn't respond.

Not only is she a coward, but she is clearly obsessed with the aesthetics of her comments sections (when she should be concerned about her art quality instead) and abusing the block system for people she is afraid of the responses from.

I'd put money on it that in her childish antics, she would abuse the "delete comment" feature, too. Someone doesn't agree with her? DELETE COMMENT. She can't handle someones criticism? DELETE COMMENT.

Maylilyx In reply to ZombiePsychologist [2013-09-29 16:03:27 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you could understand that some people are more sensitive than others and no one likes being bullied. It's not just a comment. I'd tell you the story, but you wouldn't understand. What makes you think you speak for the entire community. I just answered your question. That there are several things wrong with hiding it and it's a completely useless feature.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

PrairieLily [2013-09-06 11:24:34 +0000 UTC]

I heavily disagree.

-Not having an Edit/Delete feature forces people to take responsibility for the things that they post, to show them that what they say does not and will not go away. If you have made so many mistakes that you feel you need to hide behind a "Delete" button, then you should think before you post.

-People would abuse the feature in order to alter comments or delete things that may be under investigation in a report. Archiving these comments by making them permanent is imperative.

-If you are that goddamn embarrassed about your silly typos, then you can take an extra minute after you type up a post to check for errors. It's not that difficult.

-Oh, no! People posting "thanks for the fave" on your profile is such a terrible thing! God forbid other people should look at your comments and see that you're actually involved in the community outside of your own art! So awful!

-If the "Hide" bar is such an eyesore, then don't hide comments unless you really have to. Problem solved. =]

For the first point, some people could feel like what they said was good and did put a lot of thought into it, then months later be embarrassed and ashamed of what they said. I actually still get harassment at least a few times every couple weeks because old comments, not from the same people either. I'd rather delete comments then be forced to put up with constant harassment about idiotic comments I made(and thought were good at the time) and don't even agree with anymore. It's not about that I should have put more thought into it, I did, but my opinions changed and I matured a bit since then. At least offline, people tend to forget the stupid shit I said in the past, or they know me and know that I don't think that anymore, they don't make fun of me and call me a stupid bitch for what I thought/said in the past.

IllusionVirus In reply to PrairieLily [2013-09-06 14:59:23 +0000 UTC]

I get what you're saying, but I want to erase my mistakes in the past.

-You know, many people go through those years when they mature quickly. One day, they might be proud of what they wrote, but two months later, they might be like "what the hell was I thinking". That's natural and hard to avoid. I would want to try to remove the comments that came out the worst. Some comments I made make me very uncomfortable.

-No matter what website you're on, if you "remove" a comment, it's really just hidden from public. Administrators of the website can see all of your comments. If the comment was seriously not okay, they can easily access it. I'm fine with that. I just don't want dA to show everyone that a comment got hidden by putting a "hidden" bar there.

-I agree with the typo part. It's a good habit to check your writing.

-You know, getting a ton of those messages do get annoying after a while. People are annoyed at them because they're messy. They get everywhere. Personally, I don't mind those messages, but some people do and they have enough reasons to do so.

-Embarrassing comment that are not worth hiding can also be an eyesore.

I agree with you on EVERYTHING!!! (A buttton that only removes your own comment should be): WITHDRAW comment. I used to make stupid comments to.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

PrairieLily In reply to IllusionVirus [2013-09-06 15:22:08 +0000 UTC]

-Part of having a past is accepting it. You have a lot of maturing to do yet if you cannot understand this. I feel that more sites should restrict Edit/Deletion of forum comments because people (again) need to learn that their comments do not go away. This is true for dA and it is true for reality, as well. No one is forcing you to look back at those old comments and nothing is stopping you from moving on away from them. Really, you're complaining about something you should really just buck up and accept.

-Of course it is. But again, responsibility for actions and easily accessible comments. Admins get so many reports and complaints every day that it makes their job a bit easier to have every comment or post at their disposal at the most basic level. If you're insecure about the "hidden" bar, then don't hide it. Truly, it's no one's business but yours what is hidden there. People who give you a hard time about it can be blocked. Big deal.

-It is every time you write something be it a forum or something for school. For those who care about typos, then re-reading your material is a very good habit whether there is an edit function or not. It feels good to get it right the first time. Otherwise, I generally just accept I made a typo and move on with it.

-They're not messy, people just want a reason to bitch. If it was honestly such an annoyance to a vast amount of people, then there would be a lot less "thanks for the ___"Β  comments because the people who would normally post them, would not do so because they know how much it annoys them. Fussing about something so silly is pointless. This is an art showcasing website, not a "comment section showcase".

-Again, if it is so embarrassing, then you should think before you post. Honestly, if all of your terrible and utterly embarrassng posts are so close to the forefront of your comments or your deviations, then perhaps you have not had enough time to "mature", as you put it. Part of growing up is the ability to accept that you say ridiculous things sometimes and accepting that it is still part of who you are/were whether you like it or not. Let them be a reminder for what not to say in the future.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IllusionVirus In reply to PrairieLily [2013-09-07 02:04:47 +0000 UTC]

-I know that we sometimes have to accept the past, but why not at least try to delete it, just to feel more secure? Nobody's forcing me to look at my old comments, but I feel guilty. Why would I want to buck up and accept something that I might be able to just simply erase? Doesn't it feel more comfortable that way?

-Truly, it's no one's business but yours what is hidden there. The problem is, curiosity is pretty hard to avoid. I just don't like the "hidden" bar because it triggers up so much curiosity. I would definitely block people if they kept giving me a hard time about my comments, but most people who wonder about hidden comments wouldn't say anything about them. The more "hidden" bars, the more likely people will start to judge. I don't know about you, but it makes me very insecure. If you're insecure about the "hidden" bar, then don't hide it. Well, I'm insecure about the comment too, or else I wouldn't bother to hide it. Thus, a delete button would help.

-I've made a bunch of typos in the past (even after checking) but I forget about them later. To me, they don't matter much, as long as my message is still understandable.

-Reminder that not everyone who wants a "remove comment" function hate those "thanks for the ___" comments. I haven't seen anyone getting annoyed at them until I looked into stamps/forums for comment removal on dA. How are you so sure that people don't actually hate those messages, though? There might not be many people who hate them, but you can't just justify that the ones who do simply want a reason to complain. Receiving fifty "thanks for the fav" messages could get pretty annoying after a while for some users.

-This ties back to the first paragraph of this reply. I want to delete my mistakes if possible, which it is, in this case. Part of growing up is the ability to accept that you say ridiculous things sometimes and accepting that it is still part of who you are/were whether you like it or not. I don't grow up on the internet--just because I would like to cover up my tracks online doesn't mean I do it all the time in real life. If I were to say something that I regret later outside, of course I would just have to accept it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PrairieLily In reply to IllusionVirus [2013-09-07 12:11:37 +0000 UTC]

- Again, you can't do that in reality. Being able to buck up and accept it is a good skill. You can't just shove things under the rug your entire life.

- Start by being less insecure. Why is it that you just expect that everything else is going to fix your problems but you? You demand to feel 'more secure' through deleting it instead of working on yourself to feel more secure. Stop caring so much about what people think. The people who judge aren't with your time and honestly, I don't think anyone cares about your hidden bars as much as you think they do.

- Everyone wants more reasons to complain to justify what they want and any possible ulterior motives they may have for wanting it. How would you feel if someone who had just harassed you decided they were going to just delete their comments, making you look bad or stupid without your knowledge. People judge that, too. Or the edit button people are also begging for? Mhm, someone who was harassing you has now turned their comments around so that they look like the victim and now everyone thinks you're an asshole. You don't think that people who know a comment was once there won't judge if they see you remove it? That they won't wonder what it was if they can't remember? That they won't bother you about it?

- Personally, I don't think anyone deserves to delete their mistakes. You made them, so you have to deal with them, just like in real life. Except on the internet? You can make a new account and shut down your old one if you really wanted to that badly. The sort of 'easy way out' mentality does leak into the real world whether you realize it or not. You never learn to put on your big girl panties and use it as an experience or reminder of what not to say or do.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IllusionVirus In reply to PrairieLily [2013-09-07 17:05:15 +0000 UTC]

- Start by being less insecure. Easier said than done. This isn't real life--this is the internet, where administrators most likely look for feedback from people on their website and try to adjust it to the users' needs. Not everything is a chance to train yourself to be stronger--sometimes you just have to sit back and ask for some changes.

- I have a news flash for you. Once upon a time (last week), I made a comment about this topic somewhere else. I said to forget about the comment editing function because it's unnecessary, but still do comment deletion. I used YouTube as an example. If a comment that doesn't have any replies get deleted (or if a comment and all of its replies get deleted), it would get cleared off cleanly without any "hidden" bars. If a comment that does have visible replies get deleted, it would be replaced by the usual "comment removed/hidden by user" message, just to let viewers know that I replied to someone. YouTube does it that way, and I, personally, think it works great. Besides, if someone decides to be an idiot and delete their bad comments after I replied to them, wouldn't I be able to delete my own replies, too? The delete function can help more than one side, you see. I don't worry about people remembering that I used to have a comment before I deleted it. There's no trace of a comment there anymore. They can't be sure about it, and if they ask I'll just say I was cleaning up my comments. That doesn't make me feel insecure. I haven't been uncomfortable about the comment system on YouTube at all, and nobody has ever bothered me on there.

- I don't want to make a new account. I like this username. It's also my username for many other accounts I have, so no thanks to creating a new dA (I've considered it before, though). Again, not everything is a chance to train yourself to be stronger. You need to remember that there are places where people's jobs are to get your feedback and adjust it to your needs instead of telling you to grow up and accept it.

I'm a voice actor and Digital Artist and I agree 100%, it seriously bothers me! I always try to be wise and careful with what and how I write but I would like to have the option anyway, I mean lets say you write something by mistake or accidentally submit an unfinished comment, people are gonna think your either an idiot or crazy, but if DA gave you the option for deletion like most social network sites do then you could delete it quickly and write what you meant to write. Seems like the Logical decision.

I think they need a Delete Option as well as an Edit Option for comments, for your own throughout the site, and for other peoples comments that are left on your page.

It needs to happen Deviant ART, YOU may not see it but people feel limited here on your website not having the option, most websites do, so your's is lacking in that nature. People are sick of feeling limited, so please listen to us and add the option!
