Description Revisiting some old artwork (in lieu of doing some new class assignments....)

Lucius and Snape, old friends, fellow Death Eaters, both devoted to no one's cause but their own. I like them very much. When I drew this, I was thinking about their hijinks together in Voldemort's ranks, before Snape switched sides.

I used Jason Isaacs' face, but it sadly doesn't belong to me... nor do the characters - thanks to JK Rowling. I drew Snape's face ages ago, before I had a clear mental picture of him. So he looks sort of like (dare I say?) Tom Cruise (NOOOOOO!) Oops.

Sorry for the spam. Enjoy?

Oh, thank you so much!! What a great comment! I do think that Lucius enjoyed being a death eater. Most of the time.

In your pics, I'm really appreciative of : the use of the textures, the manhood of the characters, the movement, the costumes, the intensity of the expressions, and your audacity, as you don't draw them as pretty nice guys -even if they are precisely appealing to me like that. A few points could be different with Snape from my personal point of view, but it doesn't mean the painting is not appreciated. Great job here !

Thank you! I like drawing manly men... or at least men you can distinguish from women on sight. This is an old rendition of Snape (I read the entire series for the first time last year, and drew this shortly after) and I didn't have a set image of him. He was going through a transition in my mind from movie Snape to canon Snape - I just didn't know who that was yet. So there are things I'd change about him too, if I were to start from scratch. Thanks for the lovely comment!! (Yours are always so well thought out.)

Actually, the face is quite fine by me. It has the big nose and harsh black eyes and it is an interesting face to look at. But the hair and the white cravat don't say "Snape" to me. The hair could be heavier, with more of the forehead visible, and with more light (from grease) on it. The white clothing under the black jacket comes from the movie, and doesn't belong to our austere professor from the books. He would maybe wear a darker scarf, but I don't see him with such a shiny cravat on him. But don't worry, I'm just being very obsessive about such things

I've noticed that in your pics - the manly men. It's very pleasant to look at. Usually people tend to draw them large and muscular, if they want to make them look strong and manly. You draw them thin and still very strong and masculine, and I just admire that. My very pleasure for the eyes...

Yeah, I agree that, at least later in life, Snape eschewed such things. But I think perhaps there was a time in his life when he tried to own his title of Prince and struggled to rise out poverty and obscurity. Being close friends with Lucius, and not yet fit to his own identity, he might have worn such things. But that's not actually why I drew it that way, lol. I just wanted something to offset Lucius' striking, gorgeous white hair. That man is so distracting! But don't worry about obsessing over Snape. The strength of your own particular mental image makes all of your pieces very real, very grounded. (Which is why I love them so much!)

I think, maybe, because I've lived so long with three brothers, none of whom are macho or buff, but all of whom are strong and intelligent, I may have developed a better appreciation for the inner qualities of men than I would have otherwise... I can only hope to continue to reflect that in my work!

Ah sure, offsetting Lucius is one big thing to do ...Maybe you could have tried a paler skin tone for Snape, but sure for the balance, it's not easy. Anyway. No pb.

Three brothers... Lucky you. I had none. Wish I had one *sighes*

Yeah, brothers are awesome. I feel sorry for those who never had any. But there are brothers in spirit, if not in blood. They're good too. Maybe you have one of those?

Vizen In reply to HapticMimesis [2010-09-04 17:13:57 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, boys tend to forget the brother part, you know. They are, sort of : "interested in being your lover" - or "not interested at all". I guess the brothers are brothers only for sisters, and I didn't have a strong sister part in me, apparently. Aaarghf, well, we don't have everything in life, do we? (I am trying to explain their luck to my kids right now, but they kind of are arguing over Yu-Gi-oh cards and don't seem to understand the depth of my speech )

Lol! Yeah, nor will they for awhile, probably. I didn't appreciate my brothers (or my sister) properly for a long time. It'll come. (I mean, now we argue for fun... hahaha )
