Description
The Pukaea is a traditional, wooden Maori trumpet which was used for announcing relay signals at times of conflict and to announce the rituals associated with the planting of kumara (sweet potato) and other crops. Please also note that the tattoo on his arm is a Kitituhi (body art), it bears no connection to any particular tribe or heritage (for me to use a Ta Moko would be plagiarism of a wearers family genealogy).Kia Ora and thank you for viewing.
Pine te kura, hau te kura
Whanake te kura i raro i Awarua
Ko te kura nui, ko te kura roa
Ko te kura na Tuhaepo
Mokemoke ana au, mamori ana
e kore rawa he kupa totutohu
mohio ai ahau, me pehea ra
te whai i te honotanga atu ki te iwi e
Nga kanohi ora i o ratou
kua wheurangitia
Precious feather,
feather of great renown
feather moving forward onto Awaru
the feather that has hailed from Tuhaepo
I am left alone, a sole survivor
left with no guidance
not given the knowledge, or guidance
in search for my tribal heritage
Those that have passed on
will always live on in their offspring

I like the complicated/many-layered cell-shading. Though I think the texture on the pukaea could've been drawn by hand as a basic pattern - i.e. add line spikes to the shading. It looks odd compared to the rest.

I did do a version with it drawn but I preferred the texture that the stock image gave me, so I used it.
