Description
Nheçu (pronounced ɲeˈsu) was a 17th century chief from the Mbyá people who lived around the Inhacurutum hill, in the Ijuí river valley, nowadays Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil; and who fought back against the incursion of the first European colonizers in the region. The Mbyá people, their culture, language and traditional cosmology & civilization have existed before the State of Brazil was invented, and remain existing despite its colonial policies have tried to eliminate their traditions.

This is a homage to this often vilified historical character, and a reminder that Brazil is just a State, and not the people living in this territory, that has been known by many other names in many other languages throughout history, or their cultures and way of life.

(PT) Nheçu foi um líder Mbyá / Guarani do século XVII que viveu ao redor do cerro do Inhacurutum, no vale do Rio Ijuí, atual Rio Grande do Sul, no sul do Brasil; que lutou contra os primeiros colonizadores europeus na região. O povo Mbyá, sua cultura, língua e tradições existem há muito tempo antes do Estado brasileiro, e continuam a existir apesar do Estado e suas políticas de extermínio.

Essa é uma homenagem a um personagem histórico geralmente vilificado, e uma lembrança de que o Brasil é só um Estado, e não as pessoas que viveram ou vivem nesse território, que foi conhecido por muitos nomes em muitas línguas através da história, nem suas culturas ou formas de viver.
