Description

Ka to'o ma Haua, ma Makemake

(Take for Haua, for Makemake - old saying spoken by priestess from the ancient Tangata Manu "birdman" religion of Rapa Nui, before eating)

This illustration depicts the birth of Arangi-kote-kote, daughter of Makemake, main deity of the Tangata Manu ("bird man", in the center) tradition.

They're accompanied by the Frigatebird-like Haua-Tuu-Take-Take ("chief of the eggs") and Haua's wife, Vi'e Hoa.

The pre-Columbian peoples of Rapa Nui are often remembered for the Moa'i, but there have been many different traditions in the island, including that of the Tangata Manu. As part of this tradition, some Hopu (men) were chosen by the ivi-attuas (priests or priestesses) should swim to the islet of Motu Nui, grab the egg of a Manu Tara (sooty tern), swim back to Rapa Nui and climb the sea cliff of Rano Kau to the clifftop village of Orongo. The one who managed to do it was called a Tangata Manu, or "bird man".

Full-resolution animated version sold out as a multiple editions NFT .
