Description
The Chakana (“bridge” in Runa Simi, the Kichwa language) or “Andean Cross” is a common motif found in ancient material culture of many South American indigenous peoples, from the Chavin, Tiwanaku, Wari and Kichwa (the group which the Inca are part of). It has been interpreted in modern times as a symbol representing the Andean worldview, separating the plans of the Hanan Pacha (the heavens), Kay Pacha (the Earth) and Uku Pacha (the underworld).

Mixed media illustration (traditional ink drawing on paper + digital painting) / triptych combining the design of the Andean Chakana with many more motifs and historical architecture (e.g. the Huaca “Cao Viejo”) & characters (e.g. the Lady of Cao and Pachakuti) from other south American cultures.
