Description Okay, I did fanart of anime series Strike witches.

The series is about 11 girls who fight against some weird monsters in the sky. They fly using "striker unit" (the metal stuff attached to their legs). Then they shoot the enemies down with different weapons.

What really bothers me is the amount of fanservice. You know, the girls never wear any pants! I guess this is because some pervs want to see the girls' panties all the time. Of course they go to beach in one episode (lots of bikini shots) and the girls take a bath in like every other episode or have their clothes ripped for one reason or another. They actually wasted one episode so that one girl stole the others' panties and then everyone chased after her..... Of course there were crushes between girls and stuff. And when they fly, they somehow grow animal ears and a tail, to look cute I guess, it had no real reason. Try looking for the series' opening on Youtube or something.

So why the hell did I waste my time on it?

I heard that it had a Finnish girl in it, so I had to take a look. Luckily her personality wasn't that bad (actually the 2nd best). Her name is Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen (they sounded funny when they pronounced a Finnish name) and she is the girl on the left. She was paired with Russian girl Sanya V Litvyak (on the right), whose personality appealed to me the most.

So the show sucked pretty bad (Argh, I so hate the main character ), but because of Eila and Sanya I managed to watch all 12 episodes. They were the only girls whose panties weren't showing in every episode...

About the picture: It's the first time I actually used Photoshop to some bigger drawing, and I'm kinda happy how it turned out. Eila looks a bit stupid and her colouring didn't turn out the way I hoped it would, but I'm very pleased with Sanya, or mainly with her dress. Background sucks, because I don't have any skills with Photoshop yet.

The fan service sucks big time, as I really hated the over-sexual stuff and thought it be better without it. I was able to look at the pantlessness in a non sexual way, and it was kind of cool. But they could've really toned down the upskirts and crotch closeups.
And I agree with the fact that the main character was an annoying little shit. The plot wasn't very good either.
That being said, I still enjoyed the concept and a lot of the characters. Although it's one of my favourites concept & art-wise, it's kind of embarrassing to be associated with it because the inordinate amount of fanservice screams "PERVERTS WATCH THIS".

Honestly, Strike Witches isn't just that. It's all about the awesome Neuroi Dogfights, and the cool fast-paced action that's like something out of Star Fox or Strikers 1945, and the Cuteness and Cuddlyness and Moe'. It's not all about the pantsu, it's got more serious vibes and atmosphere to it.

It's not like Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, where they do things like do a poledance to initiate their Transformation Sequence, and their underwear morphs into Battle Weapons, and they swear constantly, and act all sexual and raunchy all the time, and fight against corny villains like Scanty and Kneesock the demons who come up with plans that remind me of something Team Rocket would do. Strike Witches is more serious and different in tone and atmosphere than that, and isn't all about that stuff.

Strike Witches is a very good anime. It's not just mindless fan-service like Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is. STOP TREATING IT LIKE IT IS!!!

Okay, for starters, I never said it wasn't a good anime; I think it was great, but it wasn't the plot overall that got me. It was the character design, concepts, and fights that really drew me in, in addition to it being somewhat related to WW2. I stand firm on my point that they could've had a much better main character though, and I'm not denying the seriousness that the series has.

It's definitely not all about the pantsu, but the creators sell it as a borderline ecchi; you can't even deny that. Why else would we have extreme close ups of their crotches, or have whole episodes dedicated to fanservice? I'm just saying that the series could've been better AND more popular had they slapped shorts/skirts/leggings on everyone, and then more people would watch it. I know lots of people who won't give it a chance because of the fanservice.

Don't be so offended; I love the series (I mean come on, that's why I made this account and been drawing for it for almost two years), but it's NOT perfect, and YOU should "stop treating it like it is".
아이고, can't take a little criticism?

Have you ever watched "Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt"? That's what I call Mindless Fan-Service. Strike Witches isn't like Panty and Stocking though.

Look at what Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt is like.

Strike Witches isn't like that. It's more serious in atmosphere and vibes and such. That's why. Do you get my point?

I'm aware of that series and how it's like. I also agree that SW is not like that.

이아고~ I already understood your point. However, where did I say that SW is "mindless fanservice"? That's right, nowhere. I acknowledge its seriousness, but I also acknowledge the presence and usage of fanservice in the show. I don't think you like to accept the latter is also prevalent though.
Don't be such a zealot, dude; it's not a perfect show.

Is it really "fan art" if you hate the show? (I'm not trying to be mean lol just one of my cheesy joke things) But I like the picture. Its pretty cool.

Are You Kidding me? Strike Witches is one of the Best!

The way it mixes Sci-fi and 1940's stuff is awesome, and the aerial Dogfights against the Neuroi Infected Ships are Top-Notch. Plus the girls look so cute and cuddly and moe' and stuff and thats a good point too. Not only that, but don't forget their conflict against the Evil Mercenaries. Also Strike Witches knows how to do a really good Final Boss, as in WARLOCK and the Infected YAMATO.
Who cares about the pantsu? I don't even notice them 90% of the time.

Not only that, but it is somewhat similar to games like Battle Garegga, Strikers 1945, Battle Bakraid, Ketsui Kizuna, Star Fox, and even a bit of Metroid and Metal Slug, and that's a good point too. Strike Witches is an extremely awesome anime.

I can't quite tell if you're trolling or if I'm expected to take this seriously, but either way I'd very much prefer not seeing your comments any more if their only content is "something is good because I say so, no other opinions allowed".

I'm not trying to troll you, I'll tell you that. I just think that you aren't paying attention to the actually good and awesome stuff about it.

Well that's all I have to say now.

The "actually good and awesome stuff" is just stuff you like. You can find "mixing Sci-fi and 1940's stuff" "cute and cuddly and moe" etc awesome and not be bothered by the fanservice, but none of them are objectively good things everyone has to pay attention to and like.

Have you ever seen Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt? Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is definitely mindless fan-service and ecchi. Strike Witches isn't like that though.

Strike Witches is more serious and different in tone and atmosphere than that, and isn't all about that stuff.

Strike Witches is a very good anime. It's not just mindless fan-service like Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is. STOP TREATING IT LIKE IT IS!!!

I must admit I sometimes don't know why I like Strike Witches. The fan service gets WAY over the top and I've never been a fan of pantsu fan service. They could've done it more tastefully, like in Blue Seed, where it was genuinely funny. But I suppose it's awesome to me to see a Finnish character in any anime. And I must say the characters seem very symphathetic to me, even Miyafuji, who is a bit annoying but not too much. And I think I like the "girls with guns" concept and the WW2 references. But the main appeal to me is that Strike Witches seemed to have surprisingly lot in common with Transformers Animated, another animated series of 2008. This is one similarity that never fails to amuse me: [link] How could two entirely different series pull the same thing of the same year?!
(Sorry about shamelessly promoting my own art, but I couldn't resist... )

Agreed about the fanservice (though I probably already wrote about it in the artist's comments), but I have to give the series the points for the fact that since the panties are visible all the time, at least there aren't some magical gusts of wind etc. that mysteriously blow their skirts up all the time. At least the series is pretty honest with its fanservice...

shihion-fon [2010-08-26 22:05:04 +0000 UTC]

hey...the shows not that bad, they cant wear pants because the striker units are kind of tight fitting, sanya, elia, and perrine all wear stockings so thats kind of skin tight. and theyre witches, witches usually have a type of animal familiar, for example elia's is a white fox (shes as mischievous as they are) their familiars also sort of reflect their personalities (some more vaguely than others). although, i admit that panty episode was a bit unnecessary, yes, they have a similar one in season 2 but that time its a neuori bug thats crawling into their panties and Minna ends up killing it after perrine pulls her panties down and she quickly pulls em back up (the bug got squashed....or uh...shatterd cause it was the core blah blah blah...). but im going off topic, Sanya and Elia are my all time favorites of the group (3rd is a close tie between Sakamoto and Trude... ) so i really like this picture, any picture of them is just wonderful.

Hapuriainen In reply to shihion-fon [2010-08-27 04:42:11 +0000 UTC]

I'm aware of that striker unit excuse, but it kinda is just an excuse to get the girls run around in their panties. And as demonstrated by Sanya, it shouldn't prevent them from wearing pantyhose or a skirt. But the creators just wanted them to show as much skin as possible and designed the characters without pants and then came up with some reason to justify that.

i dunno, i had fun imagining myself in the series being the only girl wearing shorts.... but i was also disgusted with the no pants thing, which is also why i decided to be the only one wearing shorts (i hate skirts with a burning passion).... and i'm rambling... i'll just leave now...

true true , im still aware of the fact that several of them wear panties, 3 wear pantyhose, and 2 wear japanese student swimmsuits (which in japan is majorly pervy especially if the girl isnt even in highschool anymore, namely Sakamoto, then again japan is a very perverted place ). but you have a point, they did have alot of unnecessary panty shots or other somewhat suggestive camera angles. but...like you, i doubt i would have like the series as much if Sanya and Elia werent in it. they seemed to be the more sensible characters.

you know, i never even noticed the panties, and i thought Erica's episode was hilarious! i think people focus way too much on the fan service. they were great characters and the action scenes were awesome.

people discount great series because of fan service. EVA, GunBuster and DieBuster all had a ton of fan service [in fact GunBuster invented modern fan service] but are great series.

i found Minna and Barkhorn really sad characters and i literally cried when Mio petted Perrine's head and they finally semed like a couple. and Erica always made me laugh.

i guess the series isn't for everyone...

Hapuriainen In reply to JDeko [2010-03-27 05:06:47 +0000 UTC]

Well maybe it's partly that that I'm a girl, so this kind of fanservice really isn't my thing... I don't mind fanservice in general as long as there's not too much of it, because it's pretty much impossible to find a series without it. But other than that I did enjoy Strike Witches.

JDeko In reply to Hapuriainen [2010-03-27 05:09:32 +0000 UTC]

well like i said i wasn't drooling over the fan service. i really do mean that if no one told me they didn't wear pants i'd have never really noticed unless i went to draw them. i didn't care one way or another that they flew around in panties, they were compelling characters.

(Oh, wait- Perrine's outfit also had discretion ........of course, I thought Perrine was one of the more irritating ones in the show. ;X On the flip-side, it was kinda tricky to take some of the more tragic characters like Minna and Barkhorn seriously, as much as I liked them. ¦X

It's funny, I've been study hero myths in school lately and, when you think about it, Yoshika's whole journey in the show follows the classic formula perfectly ...but, yeah- when your main character's that much of a goody-goody, it's just no good (o IRONY).

Nice job on the 3-point perspective...! (Though having them looking down on us makes them seem more foreboding than they might be...?) ;3

Btw... if you're interested in more Finlandian characters, try the down-to-earth drama,Diamond Daydreams, which should be free on YouTube. It's really not hard to tell who the best character is in that series. And, shameless fanart plug . ¦D

Wow! What a long comment! It's nice to get something more than just "cool!" sometimes.

I've wondered, why do the Finnish characters always have blue eyes and blonde hair? I mean, that Suomi Kitano has, all the Finnish girls in Strike witches have [link] , and I've never watched Hetalia, but I know there's a Finnish person, and he has them too. Not everyone in Finland is like that!

Yeah. Hooray for racial stereotyping~! \o/ (those Eila "clones" still creep me out, visually..)

Actually in the bonus episode of Diamond Daydreams, you meet Suomi's friend-turned-rival Hanna who has reddish hair.

I likes it how they based the characters off real WW2 pilots, and the Neuroi aliens real experimental aircraft.
