Description The Twelve Colonies as described in the Battlestar Galactica Roleplaying Game rule book.
It would be useful if the publisher put one in the book...

Battlestar Galactica RPG is a game from Margaret Weis productions

You would be beyond lucky to have two habitable planets in the same solar system, let alone twelve. In a multi planet system it *might* be possible to terraform perhaps a few more planets, but that would depend entirely on their location and resources available. And even then, we are likely talking about an effort taking centuries, if not longer. The terraformed worlds, would likely never be anything other than minor colonies, and not the full-blown, shirt-sleeved urbanized worlds we see in the series. The only way the 12 colonies of man 'works', is if they are in 12 separate star systems, or, perhaps, up to twelve habitable worlds spread amoung, say, a number of separate systems with varying #s of worlds. This has long been a gaping plot hole that has never really been closed. The new series, side-stepped this problem the same way TOS did. By simply never bothering explaining, or dwelling on the physical arrangement of the colonies. You can get away with a lot when you just ignore or gloss over a problem entirely.Ā

I like the image as a whole, but have concerns about three worlds sharing the same orbit. The three planets Aquaria, Caprica, and Rerglon are heading for disaster. Although, an article I read today, says that a two planets have been discovered by the KEPLER observatory, that offers evidence that two planets can share the same orbit. It depends on several factors, and would be stable only for a few million years. I am enclosing the articles address. Great Work! www.newscientist.com/article/d…

I'm really not sure how would people survive in this system. I haven't read the book and/therefore I don't know the distances. But I think, that people on Canceron would burn up and people on Tauron would freeze ...to say the least.

I've seen it; like it much better, makes more sense gravity-wise

Lovely map, works plenty well for a "retake the colonies/ Salvage the colonies to get self sufficient so we can run to find earth" style of campaigns.

I've spotted three mistakes in your map:
1. The angle between Aquaria and Caprica and Caprica and Virgon is 120°. Aquaria sits on Caprica's Lagrange Point L4 and Virgon on L5.
2. Aerelon is in opposition to Zeus and not a moon of Zeus and is sitting von Zeus' Lagrange Point L3.
3. Sagittarion also is not a moon of Hera but is sitting on Hera's Lagrange Point L3.

Oops, a small mistake on my part: 1. The angle between Aquaria and Caprica and Caprica and Virgon should be 60° and not 120°.

damn,i didn't have so much informations on my book oO but in my opinion, this map is a bit false.
As i've said, i imagined several star systems and not a single one

The passage labelled 'The children of Kobol' on page 21 in the corebook of the RPG is an very detailed description of the colonies. But even with this mistakes it is a very good map, which is really missing in the book.

Well i hope it can help in some way I don't know why they don't make such map for the rulebook. Unfortunately, my friends don't like sci-fi RPG and i've never mastered BSG RPG (or even play it as character).

How big is the Twelve Colonies' habitable zone? That's alot of planets to fit in one system. I always thought they were spread out over a couple of star systems. But Ragnar's placement makes sense.

i know this map is a bit strange...It's not how i imagined the 12 colonies, i just applied what is written in the BSG roleplaying Game. For me, the Colonies are dispatched in several star systems. The description in the RPG is highly unrealistic.

Thanks for putting Canceron near the sun...

Nice map though.

Hm...

Interesting... Until know I'd never imagine the colonies in the same system. They have FTL, right?

How they didn't colonize the nearest star systems?

...

For Tenebrae:

We barely know our own system. Wa can't make rules that what is and is not possible...

Based on the nine planet we know we made a rule that Pluto can't be a planet... How dare we?

...

Anyway have you seen the finale?

I knew Earth is going to be something like that... I f*ckin' knew it!

For me, the colonies were dispatched in several star systems, and that's why there are two sorts of ships: One without FTL for interplanetary travels, and others with FTL for interstellary travels. I imagined something like 9- 12 star systems.

I agree at min 3 systems, but more seems more likely. However beautiful work on the map, what programs did you use?

Interesting... although those gas giant moons would need extensive terraforming to be habitable... and I'm not sure about three planets on the same orbit... but then it's science fiction, not science fact.

the description is quite weird in the rulebook, i didn't imagine the colonies like that.

Much like Firefly, it's a situation that's simply unlikely to occur... the only sort of model I can picture working are when you have maybe 2-3 terrestrial bodies in the habitable zone and a gas giant with a bunch of moons... but then, my knowledge of orbital mechanics isn't that strong... There are a lot of variables but as I said, for moons out around Jupiter type distances you'd either need lots of terraforming or sealed habitats...
