I had a suggestion pop into my mind, after having experienced my own pencil drawings being washed out when I scanned them. After you scan it, put it in something like Paint.NET or GIMP 2 and fiddle with the Brightness/Contrast sliders until it looks like the original. I love this work, but it's hard to see the detail unless I tilt my monitor.

It could be. But I get the same result if I view it on my work computer as well. It could be this type of display, because the LCDs in tablets are designed to be viewed from any angle and these are fixed monitors designed to be viewed from above.
