Description
Edit: Got onto Equestria Daily! Glad people like it so much!Inspired by a conversation with who suggested that Wind Rider being related to Lightning Dust would have given him much better motivation in Rarity Investigates!.
To be honest, while Lightning Dust struck me as something of a sociopath, I always felt that Spitfire was the one most at fault in Wonderbolts Academy because she was the authority figure who repeatedly encouraged and rewarded Dust's actions.
(The comic's text is messy, I know! Thought it would look better. May fix it to typed stuff tomorrow...
"My dear little firefly": Lightning Dust flies fast, has fiery hair, fireflies are also known as "lightning bugs", AND it's a reference to the Wonderbolts' founder (a nod to G1), so I thought it worked as an old ex-Wonderbolts's nickname for Lightning Dust.

I'm generally not a fan of people indifferent to the death of civilians.

Oh, yeah, she seemed like quite the sociopath, but then some people are. Ultimately I think she just wanted to be a Wonderbolt, and would have taken safety precautions if someone in authority had told her to. That's just my view though, iit's definitely a solid reason not to like her!

She was very appealing up until that point, just for the record.

that would be an amazing connection. It gives a whole new outlook on why he behaved the way he did with RD. Unless countered by the show I totally accept this headcannon.

Yeah, I think it works both to give Dust her confidence and Wind Rider motivation for his anti-fan actions. And same for the headcanoning!

I still think she got a raw deal. The idea is to push yourself and she did just that. RD was being pathetic because she wasn't lead.

My apologies, but if I may add my two cents, Lightning Dust almost got innocent ponies killed with her stunt. "Pushing yourself" is not a justifiable or valid reason to put others in danger.

Sturmlion1 In reply to GoldenRadiance [2015-10-21 21:25:57 +0000 UTC]
The Mane Six weren't even supposed to be there! They put themselves into the danger area. Now while she did cut corners the name of the game was to win which she did. In this RD wasn't able to keep up and as the Wingpony her job was to either do just that or modify her own ability's to match her lead. Whats worse is that RD comes off as a whiny girl in that episode and jumped the chain of command heavily. She should NEVER have gone up the chain of command as far as she did.

GoldenRadiance In reply to Sturmlion1 [2015-10-21 21:37:38 +0000 UTC]
Given your talk of the "chain of command", are you in the military yourself? If so, then I'm afraid we're going to disagree on a heck of a lot more then whether or not Lightning Dust's behavior was justified, so I'm going to cut myself short before I respond further.
Have a pleasant rest of your day!

I kept thinking "the Wing Pony is just as important because TEAM WORK" would come up, but instead it was Spitefire being told off by Dash. Weird ep!

It was a military unit essentially. RD should have killed her career at that point. Not been rewarded.

HareTrinity In reply to Sturmlion1 [2015-10-09 11:33:48 +0000 UTC]
True!
Lots of people reacted to the ep saying that Spitfire seemed really strict, but to me she was just wayyy too easily wowed by Lightning Dust and then just did what Dash told her to.

Sturmlion1 In reply to HareTrinity [2015-10-10 02:43:48 +0000 UTC]
Spitfire for me came across as a vain glory seeker as well, signing pics of herself and looking for Pegasi like herself. Perhaps looking for her eventual replacement or just someone to mentor. And Lightning Dust was perfect for that as she was as fast as RD and more maneuverable, but also a risk taker.
Rainbow Dash though had a conniption fit and deserved to be tossed from the Wonderbolts while Lightning Dust should have been counselled to be a bit safer and not push the envelope as much as she had been doing. Not tossed out. I mean how does she learn a lesson if she gets tossed out before she can learn it?

There's some suggestion she might come back, so maybe she'll get reformed then like all other antagonists do now? We'll see!
It was definitely a missed opportunity to sort stuff out at the time though.

It's unclear if he is related in the show, but in this comic I went with "grandfather" because a friend of mine thought it would be a better motivation for his actions in the Rarity Investigates ep and I agree.

It's hard to see and made her really sad. Well, both are going to share the same sorrow too when Wind Rider gets the same treatment.
I'm going to wonder, is Indigo Zap is Lightning's cousin?

Well, grandpa will feel the same sadness. It's only a matter of time, as in a Twitter post, in Season 6, they'll form the Shadowbolts instead.
First time seeing her really does resemble her, but of course, she's not, both name and hair color, oh, skin color too.

Interesting theory - it would make some sense in terms of where Lighting Dust got her desire to win so much from as well.
Not so much the reckless part necessarily, but wanting to live up to her grandpa.
And I'd suggest that Lighting Dust is not so much as sociopath in that she's not incapable of empathy - she just doesn't practice it much.
She did show remorse at the end of the episode, from memory (I could be mistaken on that).

HareTrinity In reply to JNinelives [2015-10-02 14:26:23 +0000 UTC]
I interpreted her upset at the end from her being thrown out rather than being sorry... Again though, I don't think she was inherently bad, just needed someone to step up and explain that she shouldn't endanger others just because "gotta go fast" is the Wonderbolts Academy motto.
But yes, I think this idea helps flesh out her motives, too.

SPB2015 In reply to HareTrinity [2015-10-05 21:21:14 +0000 UTC]
