Description
"AS MAYOR I FULL ENDORSE THIS COMPETITION AND ITS POTENTIAL OUTCOME!"(Crowd) "US TOO!"
Oh, you ponies!
But aye, who knew Ponyville had so many hard drinkers? Maybe they should sober up before making business deals... Wait, "cider" means what in America?
(I admit to getting suspicious that it might be another term for apple juice in the US but in some ways the episode makes a lot more sense if you ignore that!)

I'm Irish, needless to say the only cider here is alcoholic and this episode really confused me!Β

Right? I'd just got back in from a night drinking cider when I watched it, heh. I thought the first mention was a little joke for adults but then minutes later all the ponies were singing/chanting about it! Was very surreal.

Haha, right? And then the discovery that proper cider's called "hard cider" in the US and they have some sort of pulpy-apple-juice concoction to call "cider". So weird!

(My Username just so happens to Have American in it... huh.. ) Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, cider is just Apple Juice. I live in America, I should know this! Stupid! -Facedesk- Anyway, I KNOW it's apple juice... unless they turned it into an apple shot or something. .-.

My experience with cider suggests that non-alcoholic cider is usually served at higher temperatures than alcoholic cider, and that cider looked cold.

That being said, I'm Canadian, and where I'm from, we seem to refer to the alcoholic stuff and the non alcoholic stuff as just cider.

Not really. Like I said, hot cider = non-alcoholic, cold cider = alcoholic.

I've known apple cider as a non-aloholic drink since I was little, it's a very popular alcohol substitute for kids here in America since its pretty much just fizzy apple juice.

The town's enthusiasm for cider season isn't that much of an exaggeration. I don't know how it is in other apple-growing areas, but in Michigan it is a HUGE part of fall celebrations. It is so much better than plain applejuice. It's like a cultural ritual to go to the orchards and buy fresh squeezed cider. Usually it gets served with fresh donuts with cider baked into them.

Neat.
Though I'm guessing that if Michigan had one of its local cider-making families under threat they might not be all, "yeah, compete with these strangers for exclusive monopoly on the town's cider-selling!"

Cider is a very tasty slightly spiced (as in spices, not alcohol) drink made from apples, and is quite tasty when served hot on a cold day -w-

So I've heard since but at the time it was just me giving the cartoon a confused look and assuming they meant some form of apple juice.
I was slightly tipsy on cider at the time, too.

Haha. I myself are from the Netherlands and I too thought 'cider' is a alcohol apple juice. Seems the US term is just applejuice. (And it seemed like 'just applejuice'. They only squish it. What's so 'caring and quality' about that?)
It made just more sense if it was alcohol, considering the reactions upon drinking it. (Is RD a seasonal alcoholic?)

Nah, I got that it was a chicken. I just liked the fact that it had Trollface for a head. Replacing heads with Trollface makes me laugh. So by "Troll bird" I meant "that bird who be trollin' "

Cider is non-alcoholic here in the States. Sparkling cider is used as a champagne substitute.

Cider is just an unfiltered and unsweetened apple beverage, it has all the pulp, and people can make it alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and it is mostly non-alcoholic, personally, I love both

"Although the term cider is used for the fermented alcoholic drink in most of the world, the term hard cider is used for the alcoholic drink in the United States and much of Canada."
Saying "cider" no more makes me think of a non-alcoholic drink than saying "beer" (and you can get non-alcoholic beer too). Thus outside of the US the episode was prone to being a tad surreal.

well, that may be true, but Ah'm one for the non-alcoholic stuff, though Ah do drink Hard Cider every now and again, so Ah identify cider as the non-alcoholic variety and' Hard Cider bein' alcoholic
Well, Ah'm Canadian, an' it was not surreal fer me, Ah know the implications sayin' cider can have, but ma Pa's family bein' country folk an' ma great aunt ownin' an apple orchard, Ah grew up on cider, so Ah don't like them implications
