Description
My 12 year old chinchilla (who I'd had since I was 14 and expected to have into my thirties) is no longer alive and it hurts.

To put that pain in context: This year has also brought about the discovery that I'm losing my eyesight in a way that my opticians can't fix. I don't know what's causing it or if I'll regain what I've lost. Yet, when I first found there was something wrong with my Lunar, that terror made my fear of losing my eyesight look petty. If I'd been given a choice between her or my eyesight I'd have chosen her in a heartbeat. Instead I got the choice of keeping her in too-painful-to-chew-food torment or having her put down.

I could go blind* and it wouldn't be my biggest loss this year.

* Hypothetically. My eyesight's still far from gone and the NHS will probably figure it out before things get really bad, but right now it's increasingly blurry and makes some things confusing (e.g. my night vision's poorer, it's harder to read road signs, I'm not as good at following fast-moving objects).
