NOTE: Apparently the foal (who IS a canon character) should be saying "Mademoiselle" Cadence, not "Madame" Cadence. Apologies for my poor French and thanks to ~AFALLINGBIRD for pointing it out.
And to clarify: Princess Mi Amore Cadenza is from pony-Italy in these comics.

I always figured that it makes something kind of like sense for Tia's personal student to be foalsat by a princess because she's special, but your interpretation does have the advantage that you don't have to pretend the animators forgot to draw Twi's cutie mark throughout the entire flashback.

That was my point. No cutie mark implies it happened before the exam, and it happened before the exam implies princesses foalsit ordinary unicorns. This is clearly nonsense. Therefore no cutie mark is nonsense.

Why is that? Who's to say that Princesses can't foalsit ordinary ponies? Royalty works in a completely different way in Equestria than in RL. For all we know, Cadance foalsitting ponies is how she connects with others. Or it could be that Celestia advised her to be a foalsitter to get to know ponies outside of the castle. Just saying it's nonsense based of personal opinion doesn't mean it's automatically so.
