Description
Evening was drawing in. The sky was heavy with cloud, tinged with the promise that the rain already coming down would carry on through the night. Beneath our feet the ground was getting spongy, the wet grass soaking my hocks and slicking Trevalyn’s feathers to clumps. It was pouring down, getting harder and heavier, but I hardly noticed. Our day had been perfect. Trev had taken me up the mountains, above the cloudbank, to watch the sunrise and together we had witnessed the sky become one giant, magnificent palette of colour, wrapped around each other in comfortable silence and awe at nature’s beauty. For the rest of the day we had frolicked like foals on the plateaus, tasting the sweet mountain grass and gambolling and dancing under the summer sun before settling down for a comfortable sleep. But now we were making it back down, through the ravines and gulleys, to the safe and secluded grazing ground at the base of the mountains. We had left later than we intended, only waking up as the sun began to set. The mountains became dangerous at night, and there were stories of unicorns going missing after sunset.
Beside me Trev’s ears began to twist, rotating like pinwheels as if trying to detect some elusive whisper. Against my side his muscles started to tense.
“What is it?” I asked, looking up at his face above mine.
“Nothing. It’s nothing.” He replied, but he didn’t return my gaze. Instead his eyes started to roam the ravine, sharp green almost glowing in the gloom. It was almost as if he could sense something, but had no idea what it was.
Unconvinced I kept walking, now trying to detect whatever it was that had my mate so upset. Trev didn’t scare easily, but something was definitely bothering him, something out in the night.
The faintest rustle caught my attention. It was behind us, but also off to the side. The rustle came again, louder this time and I don’t know if it was my over-active imagination but there was now a malevolent presence to accompany it too. The hairs on the back of my neck began to prickle and, unbidden, the stories of the missing equines flashed through my head. I think Trev could sense my growing fear because he nuzzled my face and ran the tip of his tail down my hindleg, murmuring calming, senseless things in my ears to try and distract me.
"It's alright baby, everything is ok. Listen to me Etoile, nothing is going to happen to you."
I buried my nose in his thick, damp mane and although it made me feel so much better to have him beside me, I quickened my pace all the same. Keeping step with me Trev moved closer, swinging his head from side to side to try and get a glimpse of our pursuer, because that was what it was doing now. More than that, it was stalking us. Panic was starting to seep into my brain. I wanted to run, run away from here as fast as I could and never, ever look back. Who was this unseen foe? Scared of it though I may be, what terrified me the most was that I knew Trev was almost as frightened as well. His muscles were standing out like steel cables under his tawny hide and the whites of his eyes shone against his dark mask. Like that of an angry cat his tail swished from side to side, brushing against me each time it did. Whatever the thing was, it was getting closer and closer and closer. The more scared I got, the greater the flare from my star-charm, casting flickering shadows against the rocky sides of the ravine which did little to calm my shredded nerves. Finally Trev had had enough.
“Get behind me Etoile” he told me, swinging around on his haunches and pushing himself in front of me so I was pressed against the ravine wall. He made such an impressive sight, standing tall and proud, pumping his front legs with that noble head raised and a challenging glint in his eye, that even in my panic-stricken state I could appreciate it. Steam was coiling off his rain and sweat soaked flanks and battle-light shone around him like an aura. Gone was his terror, all that was left was his warrior spirit, determined to protect his mate against the horror that hunted us. In that moment I felt completely safe. There was no way in the world this stallion, my beautiful knight in unicorn form, would let anything harm me.
“Show yourself!” His trumpeting cry echoed off the canyon walls as he braced himself to fight.
I had a sudden urge to draw Etoile and Trevalyn after seeing do them ([link] ) the other day. All the other times I've done them it's been in romantic poses, so this time I did something a little different. Trevalyn is a warrior, and I can see him standing and protecting Etoile from all the evils in the world.
I started this yesterday and I'm very pleased with it. I am completely in love with how Trev turned out, but Etoile I'm not as happy with. I don't know whether I like the rocks or not. I did them a bit differently to how I've done them before. Oh... and I've done rain again
The little story was quickly written while I was half asleep, so it's not exactly a brilliant work of fiction, but I think you get the idea of what is happening in the picture.

Blantently one of the best couples around on dA . They look so good together, even when Etoile is terrified and Trev is in fighting mode. Every time I draw them my inspiration just flows
.
Thank you for the truly lovely comment

Oooh... Who's there?? It's probably some kind of small animal that would seem no big deal in nicer weather

I never really though about what 'it' was exactly, just that it was big, bad and dangerous .

He is Etoile's knight in shining armour
Thank you very much . I was in a majorly sleep-deprived state when I wrote it, so I'm glad it makes sense to somebody else other than me

Wow beautiful!! The storminess looks really cool and I can understand why you're delighted with Trev here AWESOME!! He's the centrepiece for sure here. Well done, he looks fantastic! Etoile always looks pretty, that colour and design is just made of prettiness

Yeah I think Trev is pretty much the focal point here, but seeing as he is such a handsome boy I think he deserves it . Etoile looks more spaced out than anything, but I think she still makes a perfectly pretty sight even when looking vacant
. Thank you so much for the lovely comment

I wrote the story in like ten minutes so I'm not sure how much sense it makes .
Thank you very much
