Description A tutorial on how to create gradients in SAI.
Tutorial text ONLY:
-Zoom in 1600%
-Use the BINARY or LEGACY PEN tool to create a pattern. For linear gradients, just make a row or column of boxes a few pixels wide.
-Press CTRL+T to transform the boxes.
-Scale the row of pixels up. Zoom out as you go to make things easier.
-A WINNER IS YOU!

I found this so helpful. I wanted to put rainbow gradient accents on something and thought I'd have to do a heck of a lot of blurring.

this makes no sense to me, all upscailing does is make it bigger, it dosnt blend any of it

Did you check "High quality"?

HarunaAkatsuki In reply to Simple-Creature [2011-09-05 14:36:14 +0000 UTC]

It's just making SAI's Bicubic algorithms work for you.

If it was upscaling with nearest neighbor, there would be no difference between the black and white squares at 1 pixel or 1 million pixels.

But, since this is bicubic resampling, there were in-betweener colors created(ie some blending) in the process.

If this method doesn't work for you, I hope you find something that does and share it with everyone.

I had the same problem, but after I clicked 'okay' to make the transformation permanent, it all blurred.

its too hard to control like that though. seems ill be better off changing it through programs to get the effect i need

Transform is VERY useful! I just wish it had a a 45 degree or input your own angle option.

okay i did all the steps but its not working. the colors aren't blending. just the pixels are increasing in size and are still separate colors. is there something I'm doing wrong ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HarunaAkatsuki In reply to raikomura [2011-04-01 11:37:30 +0000 UTC]

Do me a wee favor and try the following:
1-Create a canvas that is 2 pixels by 1 pixel.

2-Color the 2 pixels different colors.

3-Go to CANVAS then CHANGE RESOLUTION. Increase the canvas size by 1300%

Do you still have that problem?

HarunaAkatsuki In reply to raikomura [2011-04-02 11:32:11 +0000 UTC]

That worked? Excellent!

The more you increase the size, the more the colors will blend. IE, if you just double the size, you won't see much blending.

You'll need to increase the size at least 10,000% to get the blending to work.

If you start with something that's only 1 x 2 pixels, then going to 640 x 480 is way more than 10,000%

May I ask how you got the Binary Eraser?
It sure would be helpful if I could get my hands onto it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HarunaAkatsuki In reply to Hime-ka [2010-08-22 12:59:19 +0000 UTC]

I made that myself just duping the eraser and then giving it the following settings:
Density - 100%
Simple Circle
No Texture
Advanced Settings:
Quality 1
Edge Hardness: MAX
Hard <-> Soft: 0
Pressure check boxes: None*
*=Well, I do occasionally check the Size box. NEVER check the density box if you want this to be a real binary eraser!

Hime-ka In reply to HarunaAkatsuki [2010-08-22 23:05:11 +0000 UTC]

Ok, well, I feel stupid for asking this, but how can you 'duplicate/dupe' a tool?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HarunaAkatsuki In reply to Hime-ka [2010-08-23 12:40:50 +0000 UTC]

Right click on a tool and you get a pull down menu.
2nd option from the bottom should be Duplicate.

hey, thats a pretty cool trick! Did you figure that out? I can't wait to mess with this XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HarunaAkatsuki In reply to ShadowFlame12 [2010-03-11 02:27:54 +0000 UTC]

I've done this on other art programs too! :3
I had some help. There's a tutorial that recommended that I draw line art with the LEGACY PEN at 1200 DPI and scale it down to 600 and the scaling process will automatically add a "nice" level of anti-aliasing. Hmm....That's a fact that can be put to other uses! XD
