The game I based his design him off came out 2002, but the first one of the series came out 1986, it's from Nintendo, and yes, plural, there were many of them, even different colours xD

Google is telling me my best options potentially with Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros, or Metroid. However, seeing as my knowledge of viedo-games is limited primarily to Pokemon, Harvest Moon, and Dragon Age...I think I may need to give up my quest of solving the mystery of Chiv's origin story. XP
