Literally Nobody:Me: Here's some more lore
I remember someone asking me a while ago why Ethan was so muscular if he was a sorcerer. Well, he wasn't always that way. He used to be skinny, as you can kinda see here (trust me, he is.) But after he was banished from his clan, he had to fend for himself. This is the time before that, when he was still an apprentice sorcerer.
I still hate coloring daytime settings, they grind my gears and make me want to sunset myself

Overall
Vision
Originality
Technique
Impact
Vision - 4.5 because this piece implies the protagonist being enslaved or dominated. I sense that even when the character was an apprentice mage, he was already being pressured to conform to his clan's set rules - and his expression is painted accurately to show his distaste of conforming to tradition. His eyebrows show a tight frown and he is glancing upward out of the corner of his eyes, as if to say it is only a matter of time before he rebels. The mysterious, white-robed character standing over him depicts power and perhaps subtly implies abuse of that authority. So the theme of oppression is felt strongly - even though Ethan does not have any chains on him, we sense he is imprisoned psychologically.
Originality - 4 because the underlying theme of a mage who gets expelled and then adapts to become a strong fighter as well is not a common theme. Despite his skinny frame, you can sense the makings of a persevering solider in this artwork. He holds his staff with determination to overcome his circumstances.
Technique - 3.5 because the piece shows a strong grasp of drawing and coloring clothing. The fabric folds on Ethan are very well executed and look most natural. Accessories like staff and spellbook are well placed for strategic impact. I feel the piece could be further enhanced with more dramatic lighting. It s not very clear where the light is falling from - it is daytime, so maybe it is directly overhead and so all areas appear to have the same light? But at the same time, I think some areas could have more emphasis on brightness, like his face, while other areas could have much darker shading, like his neck and parts of the greenery in the background (some more details on the bushes, grass and trees would be nice too). Same with the other characters - some darker shades are needed, otherwise the impression is a neutral shade everywhere. But good work adding in extra characters in the far left - they arouse curiosity and both those characters also have detailed costumes, so kudos (who the heck are those two, is that pirate kidnapping that lass?).
Impact - 4 because the focus on Ethan is strongly shown in this piece, allowing him to capture the audience's full attention. This is appropriate since it is a backstory devoted to him. His flowing ponytail is well drawn and again indirectly conveys a rebellious spirit. The overall affect is of someone planning to make a stand for his ideals.

Woah!!!! How'd you get all of that from this one picture? It's like you read my mind! You got it exactly right, even down to his expression and the guy behind him. Your attention to detail is amazing!
I definitely agree on the light thing, I cannot understand daytime lighting for the life of me. Are the colors supposed to be saturated, is it supposed to be yellowish? I can't get my head around it.
As for the individuals in the back... well, you know one of them! That's all I'll say

Glad the feedback helped! Aha - so that's Suzanne before she became a full-fledged pirate girl. You have really drawn her well, that is a neat outfit. She seems so different from her older self. That guy with her still looks shady to me!Β Β

Thanks! Well, he is shady I agree. And yeah, Suzanne was much more innocent back then.

Ooh! Suzanne!! She looks very cute!! Β So they knew each other way before? Coool!!
I feel sorry for Ethan, he donβt even have a sandal on. Does he always walk barefeet?
And is that his father? I wonder what he looks like... Β He must be a very powerful mage. He must be so hard on Ethan, poor kid.

Woah, you got it all! I was wondering whether anyone would notice all the small details I put in. Yeah, that's Suzanne in the back. They did know each other at the time, although Ethan was forbidden from interacting with females so it was kept secret. Now who's that other person? Hmm....
Ethan usually wore shoes, but when he was taken for intensive magical training he was forbidden from wearing them. This is so the apprentice could become more disciplined in ignoring outside distractions (like pain if you step on a rock, ouch!) It's kinda like when a monk goes under a waterfall to meditate.
And yeah, that's Ethans dad! I actually had drawn his face in at first, but I decided to cut it off to make it more mysterious. Indeed, he was quite hard on his son; this is because Ethan was the next in line to be the leader of the Blackstone clan. Did it work out? Well... I've already said enough. Gotta keep some mysteries covered

Ahaha, true, keep the mystery, reveal them one at a time, that way your viewers will get more interested.Β
Thatβs a lot of lore! Thanks for sharing!

Lol thanks! Though honestly that's not a really fair comparison since my stuff is digital and I can use a bajillion colors xD. But I like the selective colors your art's got!
