Description I made this quick tutorial from one of the projects I am currently working on. It is intended as a way to paint swords that is not for a competition level, but mabey for a special character or elite unit in your army that you want to spend some more "love time" on.

*This time I painted mine blue, but with this technique you can use any colour you want; just remember to shade with pure black, and highlight with pure white.
-So for example if you wanted a purple sword you could use Naggaroth night in step II. mabey Xereus purple instead of caledor sky, and Genestealer purple for stage VI.

*It is made in high resolution so that you can download to see each step up close.

*I could think of a load of stuff to add on here, but decided in the end to keep it simple and straightforward, so just comment for any questions or advice, I will be happy to answer

Also, this is my first tutorial, so any advice or recomendations for the next one are very welcome

awesome effect, but I'm going easy way. Just painting blades with Chainmail silver. My Marines save energy XD

Hehehe you can always give them a blue wash, if you feel like wasting just a little bit of energy

Might try something similar to this for an Eldar Farseer's Singing Spear.

The spear tip? Β I'm going to try using a light grey with a dark blue wash.

If i wanted a green or red powersword, would this work similarly well aganist black base coat?

Also good job!

Haydn-Redford In reply to Gnatsies [2013-11-20 14:54:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks mate Yeah! Always shade it with black and highlight with pure white... the only thing with red is to not mix with white (unless you want a pink sword )

I have no experience in this specific field at all, but I can easily tell that you made a pretty good tutorial. especially the bit at the right showing the distribution of the colors would be very useful . well done!

Thank you, mate ^^

Β Yes I thought that would lay out the colour transitions a bit more clearly than the pics. Glad you approve!

Las ΓΊnicas armas de energΓa que he pintado (Elegidos); me he limitado a diluir azul y echarlo por encima. No queda mal, pero claro, no hay comparacion.

Snowfyre In reply to Haydn-Redford [2013-10-09 03:07:01 +0000 UTC]

oh very slowly.... I still suck at blending.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Haydn-Redford In reply to Snowfyre [2013-10-09 19:57:33 +0000 UTC]

You seem to blend the colours in your drawings very well Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to Haydn-Redford [2013-10-09 22:39:58 +0000 UTC]

Drawings are bit different from painting. smudging with the computer is easier.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Haydn-Redford In reply to Snowfyre [2013-10-09 23:45:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes... I suppose so ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to Haydn-Redford [2013-10-10 02:20:31 +0000 UTC]

yeah especially cause paints dry....

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Haydn-Redford In reply to Snowfyre [2013-10-12 14:51:46 +0000 UTC]

That's why I usually dilute them with a Medium; to extend their drying time.Β

It is unfortunate there is no smudging tool available when mini painting, it would mak my life much easier heheh

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to Haydn-Redford [2013-10-12 16:57:01 +0000 UTC]

yeahhh I did smudging using a drying retarder. had some good effects but took too much time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Haydn-Redford In reply to Snowfyre [2013-10-13 05:02:18 +0000 UTC]

Usually I just use water, medium I use for large surfaces or more "important" bits...Β

May I ask what program you use for your works? I really love the effects you get on your works ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to Haydn-Redford [2013-10-13 08:01:52 +0000 UTC]

ah yes
mine? may surprise you. I use the very ancient photoshop 6... yes. an original photoshop 6 bought long past when photoshop didin't cost over 1K.
I still do it have a few old tutorials scattered in my gallery in a folder if you're curious as to how I do it. it's not too hard. A tablet does help though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Haydn-Redford In reply to Snowfyre [2013-10-14 03:20:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks mate! Thats a big help ^^

I would like to get better at drawing so I will have to have a look a those

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to Haydn-Redford [2013-10-14 12:06:12 +0000 UTC]

ah yes
a tablet helps too....

but someone once said
"it's not the size of the hammer that counts....
... it's how you use it"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Haydn-Redford In reply to Snowfyre [2013-10-15 04:41:51 +0000 UTC]

hehehe true, true, but didn't someone else also say that a painter is only as good as his brushes?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to Haydn-Redford [2013-10-15 07:41:38 +0000 UTC]

Lol
that's half true.
especially if your brushes are actually falling apart... (yes I sometimes wonder why my models have bristles stuck in them when the paint dries)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Haydn-Redford In reply to Snowfyre [2013-10-16 05:16:58 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha please tell me you don't get that problem with the tablet

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ha ha my tablet has... other issues

yeah it's an old tablet. very old. scratches, dents etc... one of it from a metal mini falling on it.
