Description CGI is just a different way of doing animation, it takes practice and discipline. It's not "lazy" or "ugly" if you work on it. Many animators who now do CGI got their start in traditional animation! Disney said they weren't doing traditional anymore, so what, their main job is to entertain (and make money), but they also have to keep with the times.

CGI is great. Though, if I had an animation studio of my own. I would use traditional animation, stop motion, and CGI anyway for what animated movie I am planning to make. It doesn't matter what animation I use. I can use traditional animation if I want to, stop motion and CGI, all fair game.

I do have to disagree because Hand drawn animation can and is still done today. Disney actually does still use it in the process of making their own films and lots of animated television shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show are done using hand drawn animation. Now don't get me wrong, I do like some computer animated films, but to say that hand drawn animation is outdated and should be left in the past, is a little extreme to say.

Unpopular opinion, but I do prefer CGI when it's done well. I still wish we had more 2D animation by the major studios.

Seiya-Meteorite [2017-06-26 13:55:23 +0000 UTC]

I usually prefer 2D, but I do love both kinds of animation depending on how well they're done. Usually Disney excels at doing it, I mean, with Moana, the ocean effects were spectacular.

Also, if I'm correct, isn't the upcoming MLP: FiM movie going to be in 2D?

HCShannon In reply to Seiya-Meteorite [2017-06-26 14:13:14 +0000 UTC]

There are actually many, many different types of animation: stop motion, paint on glass, sand, cutouts, puppets, cameraless (drawn straight on a film strip!) and many more!

Seiya-Meteorite In reply to HCShannon [2017-06-26 23:27:30 +0000 UTC]

I've never heard of sand or cameraless, those sound cool!

If I'm correct, wasn't the first film made out of cutouts, The Adventures of Prince Ahmed?

Yeah, it did (I think Snow White was the first cel animated movie if I'm correct).

I love both 2D and CGI in the animation industry. There is room for all qualities, even stop motion.

👍: 1 ⏩: 0

Mina-Fox [2017-05-02 05:48:07 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. Nobody's opinions are going to change the fact that Disney, Time Warner, and many other studios are sticking to CGI whether it's 2D or 3D. Yes, cel animation is better left in the past, but stop-motion however is what would be considered 3D traditional animation before the CGI came into effect. CGI for Disney movies used to be limited to only PIXAR ones up until Chicken Little since 2005. Nowadays, a lot of the standard Disney movies are being rated PG like they're for the tweenage generation and above, and now some PIXAR movies have the PG rating too; yet most PIXAR movies are supposed to be targeted for toddlers and pre-schoolers. And before 1985's The Black Cauldron that was the first Disney movie to get a PG (or tweenage level) rating, some movies from then were somewhat closer to being PG due to some violence and anything that could frighten younger children.

FluffyKyubey42 [2017-04-20 22:02:28 +0000 UTC]

People who say that CGI "killed" traditional animation probably never heard of anime or watch a lot of TV. And they act like their precious 2D films are "dead" and mope about it instead of, y'know, watching them again? But yeah, I like this stamp.

I dunno if he even has a dA profile; it was around the year I was set to graduate and I met him eating at the same restaurant I was hitting up near the dorm. But lordy lordy he had pretentious written all over him and if he thought he would get far with that mindset he's in for a rude awakening.
