Description CGI is just a different way of doing animation, it takes practice and discipline. It's not "lazy" or "ugly" if you work on it. Many animators who now do CGI got their start in traditional animation! Disney said they weren't doing traditional anymore, so what, their main job is to entertain (and make money), but they also have to keep with the times.

If that's the case than why is most anime still animated traditionally?

Thank you.  Those people that think CGI is lazy have no experience working with 3D modeling software.  3D CGI will one day be so photorealistic that nobody will realize or even suspect it's CGI, something that will never be achieved with 2D hand-drawn animation.

wrt cg "killing" traditional it... actually kinda did? like, "kill" is too strong a word lbr but the american animation industry has seen a steep decline in hand-drawn films because cgi was an incredible novelty when it was first introduced that we haven't really cooled off from. cgi becoming mainstream DID contribute to the decrease of traditional animation techniques in american animation. hand-drawn isn't dead regardless - lots of eastern and european countries still utilize it for theatrical productions and the craft itself remains in america in the form of television shows and behind the scenes development, but america seems to be falling behind theatrically. @ american animation studios: c'mon dudes. guys. dudes. c'mon. (nah jk jk we all know alternative animation techniques don't bring in the dough - look at how laika's stop-motion flounders at the box office. arr eye pee, maybe if you had glen keane eyes and somathat sexy seductive polygon shit goin' on, guys)

all forms of animation take dedication and practice, but cg is a very different animal from hand-drawn. for one thing, half the modern cg animators i've come across can't even DRAW, let alone animate in 2D. no need to - it's certainly not that the computer does everything for you, but you don't HAVE to develop your draftsmanship in order to learn and apply the fundamentals of animation to cgi. ngl, i do believe part of this is because cg, while not exactly "easier", requires a skill set based more on understanding movement and learning how to operate a specific program. it's less physically taxing, more forgiving, and takes up fewer tangible materials, thus cutting prices. that's why shitty cg movies are constantly being pumped out overseas for the american $1 walmart bin market lmao

still personally prefer that sweet sweet 2D #aesthetic but accepting that computer aided animation is the way of the present and future makes seeing a lack of traditionally animated american films easier. let's be animation hippies and try to get along my dudes

HCShannon In reply to mouinthehou [2016-06-25 16:22:41 +0000 UTC]

That is true. It also counts for those live action movies based on cartoons where the main non-human characters are CGI, it's worked good with Casper and made sense since they were ghosts, but the later ones like Garfield, TMNT, Scooby Doo, The Smurfs, those characters all just look better in a cartoony style and it's weird when you see them in interacting with normal looking humans.

"Disney said they weren't doing traditional anymore..."

Well, you have the fact that 2D wasn't commercially viable for Disney anymore. The Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh (2011), the last 2D outings Disney had, underperformed at the box office despite getting good reviews. There's also the technical aspects of animation to consider - CG can be fine-tuned and perfected more easily than 2D.

Yeah, like stop-motion, cut-outs, Squigglevision (how they did Dr. Katz and Home Movies), pixelation, drawn on film, Syncro-Vox (how they did Clutch Cargo and Annoying Orange), etc. there's no wrong way to do it!

Oh yes of course! Especially Stop Motion, that animation takes much more time and effort than CGI and 2D
I support all forms of animation, 2D isn't the best shit ever tbh.:/

GS-Mantis [2016-03-31 04:36:29 +0000 UTC]

The funny thing is, if people actually supported 2D animation and went to see the films back in the late 90s/early 2000s this whole "replacement" wouldn't have ever happened. CGI films were just simply pulling in much better profit margins. Traditional animation films around that time were fairing quite poorly. Dreamworks almost went bankrupt doing the few that they did, and even the behemoth that is Disney was hit with a string of films that either barely made back their budget, or was a financial loss. What did this string end with? You guessed it; Chicken Little.

While Shrek, Pixar films etc were killing it at the box office.

People shouldn't blame the big companies or CGI for "killing traditional" we have no one other than ourselves to blame. Even Disney cant operate at a constant loss for each film.
