Description I've been bashing this around in Photoshop over the last couple of evenings, in between lettering comic book projects.

I've really needed something to keep me from going insane as I've lettered the stuff I have on my 'to do' list - it occurred to me that I hadn't painted anything for a while, so I figured I'd try the digital painting route again.

The comic-relief cartoon I did of Cosmos droppinga nuke on Santa Clause actually got me thinking about subtle changes that could be made to his design. I worked from that sketch to build up the painted design, and then just added a few touches to get it looking more complete.

I like the background

Cosmos I feel bad for him. Always lonely in outerspace.

Thanks for commenting!

Poor ol' Cosmos. I always figured the character would have to either have some well of fortitude to draw on for his long spells in space, or just be a bit of a loner by preference.

Poor little fella. At least he gets a moment of heroism in the current comics series.

Thanks for the kind words - and the fave!

Sadly, I just can't do everything I enjoy doing. When I'm painting, I feel I should be writing. When i'm writing, I feel I should be drawing. And when I'm doing ANY of the above, I should be lettering!

Still, this was a quick piece to do - only a couple of evenings. I may very well produce more of this sort of thing as a little stress-buster in between jobs.

Aww, beautiful.....I love how it kinda captures his loneliness up there, with empty space and that barren planet...very nice!

Is it just me, or you colour differently when there are inks present? THis is so....velvet-y

Thanks for the fave, Seb!

Believe it or not, the original line art for this one is present in there somewhere - I just recoloured it dark green and used it as a base to paint on.

I'm always changing things up slightly. In this instance, even though I worked from inks, I just wanted to paint. My painting is always kinda scrappy, so I just got stuck in and push things around until they work well enough for me.

Some day, I'd really love to take somebody's pencilled comic page and give it this treatment. I'd love to do this for a Mosaic or something. But as yet, I haven't found an artist willing to let me mangle their beautiful pencils!

Beautiful? Dude, you can mangle mine any day of the week.....

I'll be home alone for 10 days after November 1st - save for going to work, no commitments and obligations whatsoever. After I clear up my entire Mosaic backlog then, I believe we can work something out, yes...?

Remember this thread?
Ready for manglin' some pencils...?

I've finished a TF:M piece yesterday, and a script of Jon's is next.....I mentioned you expressed the wish for a li'l colours-over-pencils experiment, he sad he liked this Cosmos and why not....if you're in, that is.

Sooo.....are ya?
Nice scripty - nature, snow, fur, all so organic (in contrast to this last piece I did).
I'm genuinely looking forward to doin' those pencils, I'd be honoured if you said 'I do'....

Are we talking 'Jon' as in 'Jon Rist'?

Because if so, and if he can be prepared to wait for some time while I work my shamozzle, I am IN, baby! Hell yeah!

Okay, I'll let'im know.

Yes indeed! So awesome, in fact, that I believe a gratuitous Godzilla battlecry is warranted:

KREE-ONK!

There. Much better.

LOL

I'm really curious now....Somehow I believe this approach would work most excellently when depicting organic stuff, quite a nice softness to it ....

hde2009 In reply to saganich [2010-11-05 15:28:19 +0000 UTC]

it'll be a challenge, as I have little experience with rendering drastically different types of surface textures in one image. That'll be what loads time ontot he project, I suspect. But... should be fun!

saganich In reply to hde2009 [2010-11-05 16:34:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, you'd have snow, fur, and a li'l bit of metallic stuff....

A challenge, yes.....no fun where there isn't one!

Absolutely!

I'm forever telling folks that when I do the same thing on more than a few consecutive pieces of work, I start to get bored. So this should be a lot of fun!
