I'm not sure how I feel about string theory, a lot of my engineer friends say it's not real physics and blah blah quantum mechanics blah.

I don't really mean that. QM is really interesting if you can manage to follow what it's about, alongside the facts I also like to listen to the different opinions the scientific community has developed, because at this point I've come to realize that there's a lot of quarrel about the topic that comes down to competing philosophies, it challenges a lot of ideas about how we expect the universe to work. Now we have this laymans understanding of multiple dimensions and multiple realities that only don't exist in our universe because of where a waveform is most likely to collapse which leads to youtube videos about consciousness and goofy stories about blind wyverns and cosmicism and quack quack goose. QM has basically become a major cop out.
