Description
36" x 24"Scratchboard and Ink
The client asked for a tiger coming out of the dark and he wanted him to be menacing - snarling even. You see he was in Vietnam and he said tigers were the thing that scared him the most when he was in the jungle at night. He wanted a picture to remind himself of that terrible beautiful creature that haunted his dreams....... tall order, right?? We settled on this pose since I didn't have any snarling references and I think he was happy in the end.
Got my tiger back from the client last week and had a professional photo taken of it. Now I can offer prints here and through my website. I have four maybe five more to collect and then I'm all caught up. Time consuming and expensive project!

Thanks for another great critique. You are right the leg is too bright - I went back and compared the file to the original and the leg is much darker. I do really like the shape though, I like how their paws are gnarly and bumpy and having taken hundreds of pictures of them walking I think the pose makes sense. I hope I'm not being too literal - not everyone has studied them as much as me. But I'll ask my client what he thinks - I guess it's most important that he gets it, not me. Doing commissions are hard because you're not in control as much. If they buy one I already drew it's take it or leave it but when they pay you to create their vision, well - you have to do it.

You're welcome. Ya, it does look cool how gnarly they are. I don't think you are being too literal (though I do tend to be literal a lot) though I see that you do have to ask your client - hope he/she loves it!

I'm working on a video where I can time lapse the whole process - it's difficult figuring out the camera mount and work space and all that. I do have four stages of the lynx I just did - maybe I can put them together in one image.

Oh, I'm such a big fan of tigers! He does look quite "on the hunt" in this! I'm sure it'll wind up being one of your most popular prints!

You know, this is almost scarier than a snarling tiger...tigers don't snarl at their food. He looks more like he's eyeballing who/what-ever he's looking at thinking "you look like an exotic meal..."

Oh very nice! I love it. I think the lack of snarl but that 'look' in the eye works well. Impressive you were able to catch it either intentionally or not.

This reminds me of that tiger from the Jungle Book. I don't remember his name, though. Just his pose and his expression takes me back to that movie. Great job!

I just wanted you to know that I just saw your Cormorant piece in the Xanadu Art Catalog and it is an exceptional standout against all the other work in that booklet. I'm so happy to have found your work here on DA. Your technique and use of color is truly inspiring.
