Description I've always been fascinated by the eyes of drowned creatures, and the peculiar pale glossiness of the skin. It's probably fortunate that I don't see it very often.

This morning I fished the poor thing out of my pond. I'm not sure how it fell it, and why it couldn't find its way out again.
I took several shots of it before burying it under a few inches of dirt and a rock. In a few months I'll go back for the bones.

Edit: Several people have asked what it was, prompting me to realize that it's not really all that obvious---it's so alien looking now. It's a small wild mouse. I'm not sure of the exact species.

I actually have an entire folder for dead creatures and decay that I've photographed. There's somethingso real about this part of life, and how anything that is new, must grow ugly one day.
It's beautiful, in all of it's sadness.
It's life.
Kudos for having the balls and mindset to photograph such a thing. A lot of people don't cross that line.

Thank you. Actually, I never went back for them, so by now they're probably dust mixed in with the dirt. Luckily I have no shortage of small bones (I use them in assemblages and jewelry).

wow, it's so hard to belive that creature was once a mouse. it's changed to such a drastic level that it's almost another creature. it's strange how one can find such beauty in the mists of death.

People love photographs because they make an object or a scene gain immediate permanancy. Paintings crack, pigments fade, but in the subject of a photograph the content will never, ever change, and that's what makes it the everlasting art form.
It's addressing detail and beauty in things normally considered "repulsive". And it's the timing of this shot that makes it awesome- where the skin has become an almost transluscent sheath over bone, making it look almost more pure than the creature was in life.

/artfag rant off.

i probably should have said what it was in the description, since it looks so alien.

it's a small wild mouse. it looked to have had grey fur that was peeling off.

thanks!
