Filbert the Fifth, without his scarf (which isn't finished). A late fifth anniversary present for
(who apparently really prefers "Philbert", but I'm going to keep spelling it with an F), and also my first finished piece for this semester's grad studio. I am so, so behind. Wire & tinfoil armature, Sculpey UltraLight, Super Sculpey, Creative Paperclay, black beads for eyes, wire earrings, acrylic paint, lots of love.
Definitely inspired by Froud, DiTerlizzi, and also the lovely creatures of .
Edit: Woah, my first DD! Thanks so much, everybody---Filbert is certainly basking in all the attention.

Oh! And also, how do you get your ideas for things like this? Do you try different things in sketches, or do you look at real animals and transform them, or are the creatures just there in your head - all ready-formed to start sculpting...?

Thank you! He's probably between 7 and 8 inches tall...and the paint is just acrylic applied with a soft brush.
I generally sketch first right out of my head, but I do definitely draw from real animals---usually after I've done a preliminary sketch, I'll go look up reference for details (like the ears) for the final sculpt.
