I think you could compare this style with painting a game mini ( warhammer for example)
It's very similar - the only difference that my model is digital and mini is actual sculpture)

Hi,
Nice work woth the uv, and model, but i need to ask u something. Is it okay to have triangles in your Maya Models? Iwas thaught only to use Quads (four sided polygons ) in my Maya model.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hellstern In reply to makthedragon76 [2011-09-01 14:09:17 +0000 UTC]

Actually it's allways tris after you finish the mesh - this inner edge is rather important how you texture will be projected on the mesh - if the edge is undefined you can get some distortion of you texture. So on a low res models you need to pay attention how you edges are going and triangulate model before texturing.

So you generally block out you mesh in quads - but on some places you can and in some cases must do triangles.

But if you are going to export yu base meshes into zbrush for sculpting you need to do only quads. triangles will do no good and you'll find out that you can't sculpt on areas with tris - it becomes distorted nd ugly.

Hi Hellstem,

thanks for the advice, but when u do modelling. Do u have to consider the edgeloops, five way junction. Or this are mainly fir the riggers doing animation?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hellstern In reply to makthedragon76 [2011-09-01 14:51:36 +0000 UTC]

you need to make mesh sutable for animation - so yes you must consider making proper loops on elbows knees and other joints
I'm still learning how to do it properly)

So soft for a such a low poly model - wonderful texture work, just fantastic.

Stupid question: Is it okay to model in triangles? Is the flow on this model standard? (It's hard to find references for flow online).

This is really amazing. I think your textures do a great job at bringing the character to life. The detail feels natural, and it ends up looking like it has more polygons than it actually has.

Thanks a lot for the information! No one ever told me that tris could be used to reduce distortion. Sounds invaluable for low poly modeling.

Also, thank you for posting the meshes of your (amazing) 3d models. They are both helpful and inspiring.

Very nice work. I have one technical question, though, if you don't mind. Why did you choose to separate her eyeball texture? Is it related to allowing her eyes to turn?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hellstern In reply to WridianGrey [2011-09-01 09:11:17 +0000 UTC]

yes. To turn her eyeballs you need them as a separate mesh - it's a common practice.
But on other (maybe with a lower polycount) models you can see that eyes are painted on model's face.
I think it depends on a needs of a project you may work on.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WridianGrey In reply to Hellstern [2015-11-04 11:17:03 +0000 UTC]

I might be setting a record for delayed replies, but I'm finally catching up so...

I probably should have been more specific in my original question. I understand that separate eyeball spheres in the face mesh is pretty commonly used, but I've long been interested in alternate... eyeball setups, for lack of a better term. I was wondering if you were perhaps using one of the atypical setups where the eye never technically turns, but rather the pupil separately moves along the eye surface to create the appearance of turning eyes. But upon studying the texture more, that doesn't look like it's the case.
