Back in the mid-to-late 90's when I played NGII, this guy stood out as the most enigmatic of all the minor villains. The player was never really given much backstory beyond a single paragraph regarding them, but Baron Spider left open more than a few questions. I always wondered whether he was supposed to be Ashtar's adviser or some other important position.
I like how you opted to color the gems in what I refer to as his spider turban green rather than red, and you retained his white-blue outfit rather than the brown one he had in Nintendo Power's artwork of him*.
* = That version was also too thin compared to your depiction, IMHO. His sprite wasn't giant big, but it made him appear much more physically imposing than the average person, as we see here.

Yes, from the instruction manual(but they look so small there) and in the game cutscenes.

Damn, I got all my NES games second hand, so I only got the game cartridges
