Description "Am I unfit for you?
Remember me, the one who turned away...
I come in rags, tattered by my fall...
And all the earth, a witness to my cries...
Mercy, weep over me...
let your tears wash me clean...
majesty, be merciful with me,
for my eyes have seen Holy..."

EDIT: Thank you guys so much! This is my first pic with an original character with 100 's!

Please, listen to this song while you look at this. Yeah, yeah, yeah I realize that it's a christian song; but I heard it in context as a themesong for my favorite fictional character in the world, Simon from Lord of the Flies, and the song really moved me. It's mostly the sheer emotion of the paino that tugs at my heartstrings, and if you anaylize the lyrics as you listen, it really does fit perfectly with Benjamin, you know, besides all the goober about God and such.

Oh, and if you can't read the calligraphy, it's my favorite Benjamin quote. It says, "There's a bit of good and bad in everybody. Sometimes you just need to give them a second chance to make the right choice." This is my favorite because it's kind of like symbolism (Yes, I am that deep). It's like, the Nazis end up killing one of the only people who still believes there's still good on the inside. Benjamin's death symbolizes the loss of truth and forgiveness. And... yeah. Wow, I feel like Dr. Phill right now.

AND ONE MORE THING! I've changed the novels name to "The Paper Stars".

Ugh, this is just beautiful. The song, the quote; I'm almost in tears here! Thank you so much for making this, though. And YES! Someone else who thinks Simon was the best character ever!

Every time I see anything on your story, my stomach chruns. Really it's lovely and beautiful and... damn, my words don't do it justice. You can just do this thing where you can make your reader feel truly connected with your characters and fall in love with them and cry with them and laugh with them and get angry or jealous with them. You have a gift of giving friends and lovers to the unwanted and the lonely and with this picture you've practically done it again. The quote, the look in his eyes, the armband... I have to say, every time I see this, Yes, I look at it often ^^ , the one thing I stare at the most would have to be that armband... You can tell by his face that there's hope in there somewhere... Just... bittersweet... heartbreaking...

One word: Love

Can't wait to read this whe it's all published! β™₯

aw, thank you! And I hope to publish it as soon as I finish; it's taken me about a year to write the 289 pages I have, so I'd say one more year left to go.

The fact that you've divulged this much symbolism into one picture isn't like Dr. Phil, it's not cheesy, it's really good! It's what makes this picture mean something. And the artwork itself is awesome. ^^

it's weird that he's blond though, the Jewish figure is more recognized with a black hair since it's more Middle Eastern.
however, this is a nice artwork I like how everything is simple and the anatomy is great.

It's more of a sandy brown, and his mother (who's blonde) wasn't originally jewish; she married his father and adopted the religion. And thank you

This is absolutely gorgeous. IΒ΄m searching for words that donΒ΄t sound trite, but really, everything from the color scheme to the handwriting, to the look in his eyes... you can see the hope living there, frought with pain and grief as it may be.

And from your description of the novel it sounds like a beautiful thing worth reading. The quote alone tells me that.

okay, sorry, I think I hit "print request" by accident
instead of favorite. not that it's not print-worthy. anyways...

this is so incredible! the drawing, the coloring.. everything about it is so beautiful.
the quote, the boy.. the bright, warm colors despite the mood.
I think my favorite part is the drifting yellow leaves or whatever they are in the air.
and that his noise is a little shiny on the end. I love that for some reason.
this is freaking amazing. :]

wow this is really moving. i love how you always make your drawings so emotional, especially the ones for this story. The holocaust was a really dark time in history, and i never get tired of all the stories people have told about it, including this one(even though most of them are fictional!) LONG STORY SHORT, I CANT WAIT UNTIL THE BOOK COMES OUT!

btw, why did you change the title? i know that it fits with the stoy (has something to do with the fact that sara escapes while banjamin stays, right?), but i thought the other title was good too.

HennaFaunway In reply to mellaberry2378 [2010-06-24 00:04:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And I just felt that my new title fits a little bit more, considering 'Blackbird' is Sara's nickname, and it symbolizes freedom and bravery in the novel.

I love the detail in this. You're great at drawing profiles. Benji's eyes are so bright and his torn shirt is very meaningful since the picture is depicting a somewhat unpleasant situation. (Or so I'm guessing.) His expression shows that as well. I love that you want him to be forgiving in spite of his horrid experiences. That shows enormous character depth. Your work and ideas are just lovely.

Your way of coloring is so AMAZING. The lighting is really well done and the way you did the skin is fantastic. The greys and purples demonstrates the hardships he's been through. All around FANTASTIC JOB.
