or.... the Rugrats, All Grown Up, Pre-School Daze and Reboot scorecard but I don't think that would quite fit would it?link to all episodes rated: docs.google.com/document/d/17i…
Oh yeah. It’s time for the big one. The 200th scorecard is gonna be about Rugrats. This is a show I’ve always enjoyed ever since I was little. I was a big fan, watched the first two movies multiple times and I even got the All Grown Up complete series in the start of 2019. When I first heard the news of a reboot coming out I tried to rewatch all of the original rugrats, I only made it to season 4. But for the past two months I’ve been watching every nicktoon from the 90s and 2000s, saving this franchise for last. That’s right. I watched it all, every episode, every movie, every spin-off. So how did they go…
Well the original Rugrats is just as good as I remember it being. The premise isn’t groundbreaking but what it delivers is quite a treat. It’s a show about babies going on adventures, discovering things they don’t understand. They are imaginative and they all try to figure out what the new thing is and what it does. The show is simplistic but it works. Tommy is the brave and caring leader who is always looking for an adventure. Chuckie is a cowardly, but loyal best friend to Tommy and likes to back out in a lot of situations but he can be brave when he needs to be. Phil and Lil are twins that share common interests in most things, especially gross stuff, honestly I do not care about them as much as everyone else even if their sibling rivalry can be funny. Angelica, now I know many people despise her but, that was the point. She is supposed to be hated and unlikeable. She’s such a snob to the babies but acts like an angel to the grown ups. Honestly, I really like Angelica and think she’s one of the funnier little kids. Angelica coming up with schemes to get what she wants even as little as a cookie is pretty funny. She’s annoying, bratty and devilish but in a humorous way because whenever a growup enters the room she will act overly sweet and I can’t help but laugh at how abruptly she changes her tone. So yeah, I think she’s a funny great character but you know who's funnier? Pretty much all the adults in this show. Not even kidding, if it wasn't for the parents I probably wouldn’t describe this show as “funny” but they are absolutely hilarious and even better than the babies. A lot of the jokes from the adults were made for an older audience and these adult jokes being put in this show about babies is kinda… kinda awesome not gonna lie. My favorite characters are probably Grandpa Lou and Stu Pickles just by how funny they are in every episode.
The first 3 seasons of rugrats were really good, some may say season 3 is a decline because of too many episodes set in the house but honestly I still really loved it because all it did was give more creative freedom with the babies imagations. There's a couple of stellar episodes in here with cool imagery and settings. After the original run the show got revived for a fourth season and while its slighlty not as good as the first three, I still really like it. Season 4 boosted the animation to be a lot more cleanier and polished, and this season gave us "Mother's Day" which is what I think to be the best episode of Rugrats. Most of the special is cute and funny baby antics as usual but then there's that ending of what happened to Chuckie's Mom... oh man that got me in the feels. Overall this show would be GREAT if it ended here in season 4, but Nickelodeon thought it was still good and popular enough to get more seasons and even have their own theatrical movies.
Season 5 is mostly fine, I would have called it good if it wasn't for the notable amount of lackluster episodes. This issue would only get more common after the first movie, and speaking of that. The Rugrats Movie is WEIRD. It's a musical and a ton of bizzare moments happen in it, such as the infamous scene of Tommy almost killing his newborn brother Dil. While it would be easy to poke fun at this movie, I honestly do like it and don't think the movie gets enough credit for what it does. Like, with context I really love that traumatizing scene with Tommy and Dil. Tommy started out very optimistic and happy to have a baby brother but as the movie went on Dil was nothing but casuing trouble and you can sense Tommy's frustration to the point he would almost do the unthinkable. It's a strong scene and the movie has a lot more well perfomed moments. This movie is far from perfect, but for a first animated Nickelodeon movie its a really fun time.
Season 6 is the first season with Dil. Its also the longest season. To no surprise this season was very hit or miss. The humor has been dumbed down, which I know sounds rich coming from a show about toddlers but Rugrats wasn't always like that. The humor can be childish but still amusing for any audience to enjoy it, it was profound. I don't think Dil ruined the show because the show already went through a seasonal rot in season 5, but he may have added the show's downfall. Rugrats used to be very good, I loved the silly antics the babies were in and what the adults were discussing. But now the characters are starting to get flanderized by their main traits and hardly do anything new or interesting about them. The flanderization also affected the adults as they are getting more dimwitted. The stories are also getting more similar with the babies using their imaginations in literally everything they do. Just gonna admit it, Dil is my least favorite character in all Rugrats. All he does is cry and scream. Ever since he was added to the show it was… awkward. Tommy, a 1 year old baby also babysits and looks out for Dil. Dil is a cheap plot device in most episodes and the writing just feels lazier and because of the new baby it changed Tommy… for the worse.
Before I get to the last 3 seasons can I just take a moment to say that the 2nd movie is lowkey a masterpiece? Mother’s Day is the most emotional episode of the show, now what if we did more from that and continued it in a movie? You get Rugrats in Paris. This movie had no reason to be this good but they went all out with it. This movie is beautiful. Both from a visual and story aspect. Coco is a great memorable villian along with other fun new characters. This movie has an incredible soundtrack including an original song "Chuckie Chan (Martial Arts Expert of Reptarland)" which the song and dream sequence itself was awesome. The whole movie is exciting and have the most stakes out of all the movies, we even get an epic battle of the babies controlling Reptar fighting Robosnail. This movie to me is near flawless and the ending is so satisfying and sweet that I can't help but tear up everytime. This would have been the perfect closure to the Rugrats series but sadly it went on longer than expected.
Look. I don’t hate seasons 7-9 because of the new character Kimi. The show was already getting dull before her presence. In fact I like Kimi when the series focuses on her supportive stepsister role with Chuckie. Unfortunately for most episodes this isn't the case and she comes off as just another "Tommy" looking for adventure, making her pretty dull. I don't think she's nowhere near as bad as Dil however. The ongoing problem in these later seasons is that they took a more "sitcomy" approach and the baby adventures are more simple and boring. Also the parents get even less screen time than before, most episodes only have Stu and Didi. The plots are dull and uninspired, the charm isn’t there anymore and the show is just bland now. It has the heart and soul but it doesn’t have the talent. As far as nicktoon's seasonal rots go, this decline isn't anywhere near as bad that spongebob and fairly oddparents had, as rugrats never had any truly dreadful episodes and for the most part everyone is still in-character. These seasons aren’t bad, just really boring. They still have some good episodes but most of them never could reach the same quality as your average episode from the original run. Even with the decline, the show still manages to get the GOOD rating even if barely. But the worst seasons (with the exception of 6, freaking 13 hours of content right there) are pretty small in comparasion to the older seasons which is why this show is still solid as a whole. Still, would've been better if it ended years ago.
All Grown Up is the first spin off from nickelodeon, ever. This was a neat idea honestly, the all growed up special was really fun and those 44 mins just wasn’t enough. So having a show of everyone being aged up to 9 years is cool. Dare I say, it's better than the original? It fixes a lot of issues from the later seasons of rugrats (hell, even some from the classic years) such as the flanderization ceased to exist. Probably because oh I don’t know, they are older now and act different. For example, Chuckie is no longer a coward, he may be nervous sometimes but it's not common, he likes to take risks (also he may be a little overprotective of his sister). Phil and Lil also have different interests and not just the same character. There’s literally an episode of them thinking about having different birthday parties because of how different they are. Puberty is starting to hit them and they need to learn that just because they are twins and their parents think they have the same interests, doesn’t mean they should. If I have to be honest, season 1 is a pretty weak start for this series. It's pretty rough and was still trying to figure out what it wanted to do with this show and by time season 2 started they were on track when they added better drama (also the new character re-designs were better, with the exception of Susie and her family due to unfortunately being white washed). Yeah, this is the good kind of drama, the reasonable and beneficial kind. It actually develops them and makes them more interesting and likable. I think EVERYONE here but Tommy are better than they were in the original but the ones that improved the most were Kimi and Dil. Kimi in the original show, well let's be frank here. She did have a personality but nothing about it was new that everyone else already had but here Kimi is a more mature and free-spirited preteen that likes retro music and has a crush on Z. Dil isn’t my favorite character on all grown up but he is still really good and a million times better than he was as a baby. Now, Dil is a troublemaker and into weird beliefs such as alien abductions. People think he’s a strange kid but he is perceptive. The parents don’t play a big role like they did in the original but when they are onscreen they are still funny. What makes up for it is the kids being a lot more fun and self aware here than they were before. All Grown Up is such a wonderful spin off, it's disappointing that it came to a sudden end because I enjoyed it a lot more than the later seasons of Rugrats. This show is pretty GOOD overall. It's not perfect by any means but it did bring new life to the franchise and for the most part I loved the changes.
Oh. Well now I guess I talk about the short lived 2nd spin off titled Preschool Daze. If you’ve seen the loud, obnoxious opening then you know what to expect. This show is about Angelica, look. I liked her in the original and all grown up but her being the protagonist (or the antihero?) just doesn’t work. She was never made out to be a leading character. Having so much of her can be unbearable and guess what? It is… because these episodes are 22 mins each. This show did not warrant a half hour runtime. The pacing in this show drags and focusing on selfish Angelica for 22 mins is just an unpleasant experience. Oh and the animation, my god the animation. Who thought this was acceptable? It looks so ugly, creepy, disgusting and just dreadful. The redeeming qualities in this show are the other characters, they're fine and Susie is still good. Other good qualites uhhh.. the show does the bare minimum of having a story structure? Nickelodeon wants to forget this existed, and so will I. Without a doubt this show is AWFUL overall and THAT might be generous!
Now for the reboot. It’s mediocre. Since its a reboot it made a lot of changes, such as Kimi WATANABE is not related to Chuckie and is 3 years old instead of 2, she’s the replacement of Susie and now with Angelica. The real Susie got the opposite treatment and is now 2 years old and unable to communicate to the grownups. Dil is also not in the reboot but I’ve heard he’ll be born in the 2nd season, weird that he’s not here yet but Kimi is lol. I get why some of the differences had to be made. The reboot is to introduce to a new generation of Rugrats while also appealing to older fans, which is a hard task to pull off. Because of this reboot taking place in modern times, they had to get rid of the parenting types in the 90s and be up to date with today. Stu is still an inventor, but he's also a gamer funnily enough. Grandpa Lou is a more proactive figure, Angelica’s mom is more rude to her peers (in the original she was rude too but it was unintentional and funny, here she knows what she is saying out of her mouth), and Howard? Ehhhh Howard? There is no Howard. Phil and Lil’s mom is now a lesbian. I will miss Howard, it was fun in the original series to switch them around and have Betty take the "man of the house" role but honestly, I get it. Howard may have appeared in 3 movies and 2 shows, but he was always the least used adult in the franchise. I could count the number of times he appeared in All Grown Up on one hand. Instead I take more issue with the new adults voices which are very distracting, but at least the babies voice actors have returned. While I understand some of the differences they made, some of them still don't make sense and I don’t find the reboot funny. Klasky csupo's unique style is pretty much nonexistent in favor for poor CGI animation and the writing is pretty bland. Though the writing doesn't feel vastly different from the later seasons of the original series where it was also very bland. The reboot has a disadvantage though for all the previous problems I mentioned before, plus the later seasons of Rugrats just had more aspects to like in it. As of now this reboot is WEAK but I’ll keep up with it and see when they bring Dil back.
Season 2 update: This season gave us a retelling of Dil's birth, interestingly the babies think he's an alien which is sorta funny. In All Grown Up Dil is into Aliens and even had his own imaginary alien friend so the reboot remembering that detail and having the babies think he IS one is genius. Because of this I prefer Dil in the reboot than in the original since he also cries less often which was an annoying issue I had in the original series. Season 2 also seems to be rebuilding Chas and Kira's relationship and will get married soon, I guess Kimi will just be Chuckie's big sister this time around. I don't have much else to say about this season since the regular episodes are pretty much the same deal as the first season, I just noticed that in this season they're working on bringing back the whole family again (except with Howard). Mostly dull season but I guess it's cool Kimi will soon be a recurring character, though she is one of the few babies without the original voice actress. I truly do miss Dionne Quan playing Kimi, just like everyone else as the adults. But with the adults at least they all changed while the original babies are still played by the old actors, so Kimi being the only baby with a new and very different than before voice is extremely distracting lol. Whatever I'm rambling too much on a season that isn't even done yet. Mediocre season, doubt the quality will improved, hope there will be another good episode, I'll try to keep up with it, bye.
Overall this franchise is DECENT. I loved the original seasons and enjoyed the spin off a lot, but the 3rd spinoff and reboot are more than lacking. I think Rugrats needs to be put to rest... thatorgiveusallgrownupseason6. Seriously, All Grown Up may be flawed but it sparked novelty and was fun to see the babies grow up and be able to interact with their parents. Had cool development and I wished it had more episodes. The franchise going backwards is such a huge pet peeve for me personally. Like, Lil and Dil peaked in All Grown Up and now we're back to square one. Man....
