Description
Did anyone else think that cupcake spike was given for his birthday looked absolutely delectable (despite it's lack of edibility for obvious reasons)? I imagine Pinkie having a hard time being in the same room as it before Spike picked it up.Also, this took a LOOOOOOONG time. Hope it shows! Critique is gladly accepted, and encouraged if you have anything you want to say. Download it if you want to see her in a ridiculously large size because pressing your face against the screen as hard as you can just isn't enough.
By the way I'm opening commissions real soon, so yay!

This is perhaps the absolute best piece of Pinkie Pie art that I have ever had the privelage of witnessing in all my lifE Where to start?! First of all the character design is absolutely brilliant and stays true to her character! The scale of her face such as the contrast between eyes, mouth, and ears is done extremely well! I also really love the stunning textures that you used! Her mane is somewhat two dimensional with a beautiful flowing thickness that adds wonderful dimension! The lighting and shading contrast literally work together perfectly and I love all of the detail that you poured into this piece! The color work is breathtaking and the line work is so clean! I have nothing bad to say about this piece at all because of the artful mastery that is displayed here! I love this fantastic piece and I would be insane if I said that I did not want to see much more! Amzing work! I do so hope that you continue to showcase your brilliant art! Kind regards, Princess Luna

How could 5 deviants find this critique unfair? "76 out of 81" Are you kidding me?
This is totally fair.

Well, I take the base color, then put shadows on top on a clipping mask, and try to figure where my darkest tones should be, and get them on with the copic brush at a low opacity, so I can gradually build the tones as I go along. Once everything it pretty much where it needs to be, I go over it as light as I can (physically with my hand/tablet pen) with the blur brush on a high opacity. After That's done, I put on another layer for the highlights/lighter tones and do the same thing. If I think I should darken the area, but already have things where I like them, I can go and copy the layer and mess with the mode (sometimes multiply, overlay, or shade) and the opacity, and keep doing that until I get it to where I like it, and then merge all the layers darker than the base value, and when I have the layers that are lighter than the base value how I like them, I go and merge them with each other as well. Merging effect layers with normal layers will cause the effect layer to turn into a normal layer right before merging, so mess with the values and opacity to try and get the layer to look the same in normal mode as it would in the effect mode it was in before you merge it down. Multiple layers can be used, but I try to go and merge as much as I can, purposefully going out of my comfort zone of having all those layers separate and independent of each other, so it's easier to mess with the overall adjustments for areas of the picture, or of the picture as a whole, later. I also now try to only use effect layers when I duplicate layers or adjust layers, and now when I go and draw out stuff, because they can create problems when messing with things like clipping layers and layer groups, and they'll come back to bite you if you just create tons of new layers early on in the drawing, and it's really tough going through all your layers, trying to find the one with the tiniest blemish imaginable. It also forces you to become more comfortable and confident with your brushwork in general.

He might cry. Pinkie would be pretty darn bad if she made Spike cry. She'll probably consider that before sinking her teeth into that cupcake

BoneSatellite In reply to Here-for-the-ponies [2014-07-22 07:07:12 +0000 UTC]
I remember Spike crying when he thought the person his life revolved around stopped loving him, when he suffered a realistic vision of being abandoned, and when he was suffering an identity crisis. Pinkie Pie might think he would cry over a cupcake...

Here-for-the-ponies In reply to BoneSatellite [2014-07-22 16:02:58 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I get that. I agree, but they say they write Spike to be 7 or 8, and his character doesn't seem like a 7 or 8 year old most of the time.
He'd be the only 7 or 8 year old to not cry if special food made for them on their birthday was eaten by someone else.
