It does look like the setting is in an early time period. The big wall makes me think the serpent peoples' technology is good, and they still just like to have a pretty, old-style town even though they have ways to build really big things.
Gwynn's house looks really fancy. Wooden floors are nice. My Japanese teacher's house is part old fashioned and part modern but it has wood floors and it reminds me of a house my family used to live in.
