This is great!
The concept behind this is -well, once understood and accepted- easy and logic and we all should be aware of that, but sadly we aren't.
It reminds me very much of my semiosis lessons at university. Thinking about our way of understanding and interpreting is really more than just helpful for artists.

Brilliant. Simply brilliant. You may have just saved countless young artists much frustration. Where were you back when i was first learning?

Very interesting lesson on "semioptics"!
next you should make "negative spaces"
perhaps the "golden square"
importance of line, types of line etc!

Funny you mention Loomis. There's a member at CA.org that, while I think it's good that he tries to give advice and points out that their anatomy is off, never really gives them advice on how he would go onto fixing the issues, but just always point out towards the Loomis books.

Have you read anything by Scott McCloud? Because if you haven't and thought of the whole symbols thing on your own, I applaud you. I really do, because besides him, you are the only person I can think of who's made this distinction.

I have indeed read his book! He's not the first guy to talk about this stuff, though. It's (if I understand correctly) a concept borrowed from psychology.

Sorry... signs and symbols come from semiotic, started as linguistic, then evolved to visual semiotics!

Phenomenal articulation and a great guide to overcome some of the biggest problems an aspiring artist faces. I commend you for laying out a semester's thesis of drawing in such an easy to understand format.

Thank you, THANK YOU. I find this stuff very interesting and IMMENSELY helpful, and I am decidedly NOT a cartoonist.
By any chance, are you familiar with Scott McCloud's work? A lot of what you're saying heterodynes very nicely with the stuff I've heard from him regarding comics.

Bah, in hindsight that was a silly question; you make a webcomic and you know your stuff. I might as well have asked you if you knew who Robert Crumb was...

I don't think I complemented you on this yet. This essay was a riveting and interesting read, and I learned quite a bit from it about my anime visual cues I am still stuck on. I am working to deviate from it, but this essay helped me to be aware of it. Thank you so much.

Great tutorial. There's something about it that makes me want to keep reading even though I already knew how important it is to know where my symbols come from.
The only part that I disagree with is that adults or kids around 12 usually do recognize that their drawings aren't realistic. I think that's why most people over 12 say things like, "I can't draw." Then again, deviants aren't like "most people over 12," so I can see, as you said, alot of us not distinguishing between a symbol and what it represents[[yes, I know that's not a quote ]]. Especially since alot of deviants aren't aiming for realism, like those guys that say that they can't draw.
But I'm just being nitpicky and chatty- an awesome combination . I still get your point.
On to part 2~

If not, you should. You might find a lot of these ideas there.

What an amazing piece of writing. I find it interesting that the majority of people +Fav'd the second part instead of the first -- how unfortunate for anyone browsing their favourites?
I can say with absolute, 100% certainty that I do the specific example you've named, the anime-long midface, and god knows how many other awful things as well. I first started reading about drawing symbols in place of reality some time ago, and while I knew it was something I suffered from, it wasn't something I'd really taken an active role in correcting. Similarly, I've known that my noses are too long for years and years, but knowing they were wrong never actually worked to make myself stop doing it, and the problem has instead morphed into leaving too much space between the bottom of the nose and the mouth.
What a great thing you've written. Even having already read about drawing symbols, and knowing my noses were too long, I'd still failed to make the connection that it was caused by replacing one symbol for another. Thank you!
