Loomis, attempted trace but found it terrible. Resulting figure has a shorter torso, narrower shoulders, narrower neck, shorter arms, larger hands, less 'stiff' breasts without centered nipples, and no heels.

This is really helpful, thanks! Easy to understand. And also thanks for all the anatomy resources!

I knew i couldn't be the only one who found those loomis things odd. I mean really, how often are you going to have a woman in high heels. It was my high school art teacher's bible though.

I got the same andrew loomis references from my croqui teacher, or perhaps a trace from loomis done by soemone else, not syre. But what struck me as hilarious was that the male was naked, ideal proportions. The female, ideal proportions.. but not naked. She was wearing high heels. HIGH HEELS?!?!?

Great tutorial though the comparison between the ideal and actual are great.

Nice to see you make fun of Loomis female croquis... I was taken aback the first time I saw that. Most women have wider hips that that!
Something I'd like to metion is that marking up the thirds to make the face is only a simplification, as the rule of thirds for composition is just a simplification of the golden mean. More info here [link]
(it helps with the long nose problem)

Really, really helpful. I always found I had trouble with head proportions- the nose, the eyes, but I think this is going to help me a lot. Thank you very much!!

LOL the face on the very first man you drew looks like Krillin when he realises Goku isn't around to save the day.

This is very helpful though <3

I like a lot of the things you've pointed out, in this and your other tutorials.

Also, the Loomis woman. What is that even, oh my god. xD

Very very nice! This breaks down body proportions in an easy-to-understand way without just giving, like, one diagram to memorize.

Something I added to my R&R video library that I thought you might want for yours - [link] Note the correct use of the head unit (crown to chin) in measuring the width of the chest. He could as easily use it to check shoulder width (2 and 1/3 heads for the ideal male figure 8 heads tall - according to Loomis).

Many thanks for the resource list! I've been looking for the Hogarth books for years.
I'm glad you are using scribd.com this way. I do the same. I have my reading list linked on my DA profile page. Putting listings like this directly in the lesson makes really good sense.

Sol-Caninus [2010-12-07 20:16:29 +0000 UTC]

You surprise me. Head units are measured crown to chin whether taking verticle measures or horizontal ones. But here you use ear-to-ear measures for width of the figure. This is a mistake. (I used to do the same thing. It's an easy one to fall for.)

For the standard unit of measurment that applies here, spin the head a quarter turn so the crown and chin are on the horizontal. That's the unit to lay down.

I'm actually just following the guides given, in this case! I measure shoulder width pretty much exclusively by sight. I had no idea that the ear-to-ear measurement was a mistake, despite not using it in my personal work. If I get the chance soon, I will make that correction! Many thanks.

You're welcome. Glad you explained.

You're one of the few deviants I've come across who is a full time thinker when it comes to art. Even so, you can never take anything you get here or online at face value; research everything. My favorite artists - the best of the best - get it wrong all the time. One has to separate the wheat from the chaff, because it's a package deal.

heysawbones In reply to Sol-Caninus [2010-12-15 00:19:35 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely, sir. If I never made mistakes, I think I'd worry a little about myself - and if I made mistakes and nobody ever pointed them out, I'd worry a little about everyone else

Thanks so much, though! I'm very flattered.

I'm not a member of TAA (thinking of registering for next semester), but is it okay to borrow the homework task in the meantime? I'm rather interested in seeing how my characters stack up to the ideal.

It's a terrific guide anyway, it's very rare that I see online anatomy tutorials that don't involve either stylised or highly idealised figure types. On that note, I have to agree with your Andrew Loomis comments too. I found quite a lot of his work useful when starting out, but sometimes his adult body proportions were difficult to work with when drawing average looking people.

Also, were we supposed to get our other lessons from you with comments and notes? I don't want to seem impatient, I know you have 70 (!) students, but I was just wondering.

Thanks!

XD I love your comparison of Ideal and Actual women. I have recently been looking at various artists who all learned proportions from J Scott Campbell (in my opinion one of the worst drawers of the female body in comic books ever) and laughing at how they think women's waist go skinnier than their head, suddenly cut off by their large hips and that their spines can even bend certain directions.
