Description
Sequel Tutorial to the one about basic hatching. This one is a bit more involved. I love snake-hatching, and I think being able to do it by oneself is gratifying. I hope this is useful! Let me know what you think, or if there's anything you want to see in the future...
*This is something modeled after the technique used in Roy Toudo's Pen & Tone Techniques.
This pattern is often sold as a screen tone and is included in Computones, but you can mimic the effect yourself, getting more control over the placement.

Thanks for the TUTORIAL!, It's really useful for someone who don't use too much the Photoshop or Manga Studio for Background FX. Thanks !

I'm glad you find it useful. I have both of those programs, but I still prefer doing hand done effects. There's so much freedom in being able to customize them!

a 100% true, I also love the traditional way to work in mangas. I have another question for you. Which is the better way to develop a Manga. ΒΏIn Colour or B&W?,

HeyTayHolt In reply to J0SERO [2010-10-06 01:25:23 +0000 UTC]
There is no "better" way, really. Some like color, some like B&W. I prefer B&W simply because I am a fan of B&W and it's much, much cheaper to print.

Eh. Not really, once you practice up. It's gotten to be pretty second nature by now. It takes me less time to do these effects than to actually draw. I should do a video sometime; it's not too bad, I swear. :>

damn that is some skill u have for hatching.Ever since i saw that texture on that page of vampire fetish i been wondering how the heck you got such an incredible effect.Never would've have guessed that it was another type of hatching, good stuff

This is my favorites type of hatching, making it twirl and curl in all different directions. I like going for broke and trying these kinds of things because it's fun. Hopefully I will be learning more and sharing more soon...l

So you do all the background by hand? O.O It's admirable.
Very useful tutorial, is it ok if I used this for pencil technique? I think it would come out right.
π: 0 β©: 1
HeyTayHolt In reply to KaeruLapin [2010-02-07 15:50:55 +0000 UTC]
Mostly, yes. There are a few computer tones slung into my works, too. Like I was saying to eviloddball, I'm very much a hybrid when it comes to these things. I do a lot of stuff by hand though, yes, because it comes out better for me, and I'm fast at it...doesn't take me long at all to do. (It takes me A LOT longer to lasso sections and apply computer tones.)
Oh, and you're right! I'm sure you can use this with pencil too and there's no reason you shouldn't! Have fun!

Eviloddball In reply to ??? [2010-02-07 15:18:51 +0000 UTC]
it seems like you handtone then. That...is absolutely amazing and the time it takes to do it! *is amazed*

HeyTayHolt In reply to Eviloddball [2010-02-07 15:47:11 +0000 UTC]
Actually, I'm hybrid. I tend to do hatching by hand though, because it comes out better for me. But technically, I've very hybrid because I mesh hand-tone and digital tone together.

ohhh how cool too ^^ So do you do the more complicated stuff by hand and then like hair toning on the computer?

damn this is so helpful! for over a week now for backgrounds and textures
and with this I now search for bristol paper as so far I have used Printer paper

HeyTayHolt In reply to RurouniGundam [2010-02-06 08:21:38 +0000 UTC]
Yay~! Actually drawing paper can be good too. You don't have to limit yourself to Bristol - that's just what I like to use. Generally, the heavier weight the paper, the better it's going to take ink. Some sketch papers are pretty good quality, like Strathmore and Canson. You can usually feel by physically running your papers over the paper if it's going to be rough and soft, or of course, actually trying out whatever it is you want to try with ink. Local craft stores (we have Hobby Lobby and Michael's here where I live) are always going to carry good paper, and you can even ask the associate's what is good to use. Online, dickblick.com is a good store, and there's always eBay to hunt for cheap deals!

Cool! I've been waiting for this XD. So the type of paper actually has something to do with why my sakura micron died so fast T_T. Darn it... I use rough paper cause it's best for watercolors T_T. It's troublesome, I can't find a paper that fits them all. Is this Bristol paper good for watercolors too? Although I'd have to order it, I haven't seen as much as a hint of it around here... actually it's the same with the nibs. I'm using something which I THINK is a G pen, I don't know if it's really G or not (they don't commercialize to many nibs around here either). LOL poor country is poor T_T.
Anyway, I love the tutorial XD. Good going!

HeyTayHolt In reply to coloridium [2010-02-05 21:39:11 +0000 UTC]
Hmm. Well, I'm not exactly a paper expert, but I always read the front cover of the paper pads to see what media it takes well. I just noticed that those rough sketch types soak up lots of bloody ink! I'm about to go to the craft store, so I'll be sure to look around and see what I can learn by reading about them. There's more out there than Bristol, surely...
As for nibs, that can be difficult to determine, right? There are so many commercial nibs, not just Japanese ones, too. I'll see if I can make a tutorial about nib types later with lots of pictures.... (Though I need to research a little first.)
Glad you liked this, Neji.

Well, now there is one! It was actually kind of hard for me to explain to my sister, so I put a lot of thought into it and I hope it is understandable...

Knowing how lazy and unmotivated I am I would just copy paste ready screentone with that pattern T.T But this one would look so much better

The cool thing about doing by hand is you can customize where and how it goes, often helping with focal points. Copy & paste is fine, though. There's nothing wrong with it. I just think this way is cool.
