4 EDIT: Made some more corrections and adjustments to this tutorial.3 Edit: Okay finally updated this with actually used methods of book binding other than my sad self taught attempts. Also, good book to buy is "Hand Bookbinding" by Aldren A Watson. I got one for like, $10 on Amazon, but it is the best instructions I've found. This tutorial I've provided is keeping in mind those with little resources. So if you want to go all out, get the book.
2 EDIT: Bought a book on Amazon called "ABC of BookBinding" by Jane Greenfield and this gave me correct terminology and allowed me to finally find the correct meathods of binding the pages. I will eventually get around to editing this tutorial but then there's youtube: type in "kettle stitch" and you will find some fabulous tutorial videos.
1 Edit:Went in and corrected the stitching method for binding the page sections together, this should work a lot better now.
Don't forget page 2= warrioronlydude.deviantart.comβ¦

Gasp! I did all those images on Photoshop with just a regular old mouse. Not fun! Any who here is a fulfillment for a request on "How did you make the giant pirate book." Well, that would take too much time just to tell how to bind the book so I just wrote the basics which could be applied to any size book with any material. So here is and enjoy the knowledge. This technique is my own from which I derived after many years of searching for a good tutorial myself. So I guess you could say this is a combination of many tutorials and many trialβs and errors on my part. This is page one of two cause the file was too huge for Deviant art.

Is there a special way I'd have to print my fanfic to get a signature?

Yes. Here is an easy way to understand the layout:
Get some blank pieces of paper and fold the number you want in a signature (8 for example) then take a pencil and number the folded pages in order then separate them and lay them flat and you can see where the printed pages will actually end up. How to do this on the computer is if you have Microsoft word you go into 'page set up' and on the margins tab (in my edition of word)there will be a drop down menu titled 'multiple pages' and you select 'book fold'. Then it will give you a second drop down that let's you specify the # of pages you want in your booklet but remember these will be double sided two pages a side( ex: if you select 8 that will print 32 pages of your story.) But this feature is just for small booklets so what you have to do to be able to bind it is you print one signature at a time. So you'd tell the program just to print a 8 page booklet and specify pages 1-32 in the print settings. Then once that's printed you go back in and tell it pages 33-65 (make sure you do the math) and you'll keep doing that for each individual signature till it's done. Make sure you keep your signatures separate and double check the order when you fold them together so the page #'s are numerically in order. Then once those are folded be VERY careful to make sure you keep the signatures in order when you sew them together because it's easy to sew them backwards. One way to avoid this is you line them all up and draw a 'V' on their spines so you can see visually what order they go. But otherwise just pay close attention. I have yet to find an official program or what not that prints signatures so it's a bit of work.
I hope this was helpful and feel free to ask more questions.

I don't understand the "sewing vertically through the holes" part. :/
I may seem like a doofus, but I truly don't get it..... >____>

Actually, don't bother with that part, I finally found the real way to do it, it's called the kettle stitch, I haven't had time to update this tutorial, but in the notes I mentioned that if you type "kettle stitch" into youtube, you get some fabulous video tutorials. Those should help you pretty well until I am able to correct this tutorial.
