Description
I know this one is kind of boring, but it's really condensed and simplified if you'll believe me. We'll actually be pulling from this as we go, and it'll make so much more sense as we progress!Knowing these things is important! Especially when it comes time to make our own screens in Photoshop!
We'll learn what attributes describe a halftone. What do all those numbers mean? What are all those options? Yes. Be there or be square!
Planned Topics:
1. What is a Screentone?
2. Anatomy of a Halftone: Frequency, Angle, and Spot Shape
3. Before We Start: High-Res, Low-Res.
4. Moire Pattern and Overlays
1. Manufacturer-supplied first use date for Zip-A-Tone
2. Manufacturer-supplied first use date for Chart-Pak
3. Manufacturer-supplied first use date for Letratone
4. Real World: Scanning & Halftones by David Blatner, Conrad Chavez, Glenn Fleishman, and Steve Roth. Blatner.
DISCLAIMER. Cell belongs to Akira Toriyama...

I confess...
I still have some sheets of LetraTone...!
They were hard to use...
and expensive...!
The size and angle of the pattern...
had to match the Perspective...
Β
Used creativily...
they belong to Op-art...
Pointilism...and before that...
to Impressionism...
Β
Long before that...
patterns of small dots...is in use...
in printing...silk screening...
and is part...of weawing...
to achieve tones...
Β
Patterns...
have always been a Means...
of expression...
Rythm...
Β
One more Screen is present:
The one we are looking at...!
Here...
Light is the pixels that are On...!
A White photograph...
is heavier in bits...
than a Black...
because more pixels are on...
Β
A screensaver is something Black...
Β
From Light...to light...
but the translation...
is still important ...
personal...and interresting...!
Β
Greetings Taylor...
Great modern take...
on a Classic theme...
Jakob.

shapeshifting and morphing...
In true Disney...and Manga style...

I love how well you organized this information, its quick and to the point, love the jokes too! Did you study this in a school and organized your notes to form this tutorial?

Thanks! I'm so happy it's readable. It is some boring/droll content indeed, really. XD
No, I really made this solely in order to try and fill some gaps in my knowledge. It seems like I learn best by making tutorials! I did a lot of reading, library haunting, bothering others, bothering my peers and research to try and collect information, as you might see from citations!

OH YES MORE! dA needs more tutorials about traditional screentones and screentones in general! I made one a long time ago, but I'm happy to see more people bringing up this lovely medium!

Love!
I've had the chance of testing traditional screentones and I discovered I don't really like them. They're tremendous work and require a lot of skill to get them right. However it's true the originals on paper done with them have a certain pro quality to them.

HeyTayHolt In reply to raluca-z [2012-04-13 23:31:57 +0000 UTC]
Yay! I hope to make this series about both traditional and digital toning. ^^ The next tut really applies to both. Originals do have some nice capacity for effects, like scraping them with a blade, but I think digital tones have their advantage, too!

ooohhh my mind is bursting with knowledge!
Thank you, I was always a little confused with screentones, I once tried doing simple screentones by hand, but that just looked messy : P
These tutorials will help a bunch!
