Yeah, this is basically what I had in mind when I first started working on the original Block Golem 8-bit sprites.

Heh, most of the time was to set up everything to work.
Save each part of the body as its separate file
Opening them all up in Maya, one Image Plane at a time.
Making the 3D grid pixel sized so I could evaluate how far each part moves.
Then to rearrange them all so each part is in front of the right one and starting off on the correct pixel.
Of course there was the animation itself.
Then it was all an issue to render the frames with the correct colors (raw tends to make stuff much darker than what it looks in sRGB)
Finally I had to re-time the entire animation so that it'd look good when put together as a gif (speed seen in maya and in picture based gifs don't translate all that well)
So I guess this was about 3-4 hours of work.
