Description
Well, I'm taking a watercolor class and I thought, "what's the point of taking a class if I never use it?" So I took a little bit to do a watercolor. Ish Gary, his arcanine, and his little eevee ^_^;;; Is a little blibbidy blobby, but hell, watercolor is hard to control.Related content

Watercolor is hard to control, or rather you don't really control it, you apply it and hope it doesn't decide to spread everywhere. You seem to have controlled it very well, but of coarse being the author of the piece you would see all of the mistakes. Some of the color in the sky seems to match some of the color in the mountains a little too closely, thusly it took me a second to realize the mountain on the right was a mountain and not the sky. I believe that a little color bleeding may help, applying the water first to the sky and letting the color spread (but I'm sure there are other ways). You made the characters stand out rather well, sometimes in watercolor they can blend into the background too much.
You know this may sound weird but the rock on the left is absolutely beautiful, expertly executed. The grass is also very nice, but I would almost like to see more than just green, I see some blues and browns sneeking in.
The sense of lighting is great. Over all the picture feels like a perfect spring day with three great friends on a grand adventure.

... It's not "just" that your work with nearly any medium is fantastic.
It's that you also clearly have such a tight grasp on lighting, proportion, and *drama*. It's a simple, yet extremely beautiful piece!

Wow, you say that but I don't see it.. it looks great to me. O.O I can't do watercolor very well -- or at least I haven't practiced much. Nice job.

I've only used watercolours once myself, so i'm even more impressed with the result you achieved with this. I'm particularly impressed with the way you did the shadows on the hillside

Now I'm not big on Poke'mon, but I've always loved arcanines and ponytas/all the horses. Oh yes. and Charmaders were also cool. But I love this pic, mainly the arcanine.^^
You'll get better at watercolor.^^ You have lots of romm to improve, though I'll say, this is a much better attempt at watercolor than I could ever make!

*sigh* Well I can't be good at everything. Watercolor just isn't up my alley at all. It requires perfection with every step and you can't fuck up once or the whole thing is ruined. I like to fiddle and smudge and smear and erase and that's impossible with WC. I give up.

No no NO! Don't give up! I'm not saying your pic looks bad! It's accurally quite good! Never GIVE UP! I forgot to add in that last post there how much I love the shadows you did on the grass. The mountains are also great, but they could have had a bit more of a dimension if you had added shadow to them as well.

neh, it's just that watercolor's just not my thing. I always feel strained and ill at ease when I'm working on it, like I don't know what to do next. And there's no good forcing yourself to do something you don't like to do, eh? Maybe I'll try a different style... One with ink lines, like the more traditional anime style. *goes into ramble mode* Really, watercolor is the kind of thing that works best with reference; you can pick out exactly the right colors and things. I can fake a good picture in other mediums because I can "fix" things that don't look right. My watercolor with refs looks just fine. I just need to learn how to make it work for me I suppose.

yeh, I layerd down the darks and lights with complimentary colors and worked from there with washes up to the details. I need a lot more practice, but I think so far I'm doing AOK ^_^

wow, thats amazingly good o.O. I really like the colors you used, they make the pic look so peaceful . I'm wondering though, what paper did you use for this? I'm attempting to make watercolor pics too, but I can't find a good paper or bristol board or whatever.
I love those mountains

I used Reeves 140 lb coldpress paper. If you want a more brushstrokey look hotpress is smother and takes the stroke much better, but if you want that textured drybrush look rough is best. The cold press works well with pooling color and flat washes. Good luck!

That's really good for watercolors...yeah. I never liked watercolors much for I suck with them, but you did well! I really like the sky. And the Eevee. x.x It's so cute. The tips of Arcanine's mane and tail look a bit solid, but I understand how hard it is to get it to "flow" with watercolors. The grass looks spiffy, that rock is cool. xD Purple mountains...so majestic. ^^ I bet if we could see Gary's face, it'd be thoughtful.
