Description
As a colt, Mercury had dreamt of having his own herd. He had watched his father lord over his mares with strength and kindness. His father had been a noble leader, and instilled many of the same qualities in his children. He admired his sire, as many did in the herd, and thought of him often even after leaving his birth herd. This... this wasn't what he had expected leading a herd to be like, though...
He had been traveling on his lonesome for so long, that when fall finally drew to an end, he had nearly resigned himself to another lonely and cold winter. But then, he had met Hinata. The young filly was an orphan separated from the herd that had adopted her. Yet, for her sad story, she was a tough cookie. She had stared him, a rather gruff looking bachelor, down fearlessly. When he had offered to travel with her, she had readily accepted. While originally he had only offered out of pity, he found that she was better company than he had expected. She was smart and quick witted, and more often than not it was her keeping him on his toes. With a mischievous smile, she would nip his shoulder, and in an instant he would be taken back to the days he was a colt playing with his siblings. The two would gallop across the valley, looking like fools, as they played. This little filly who had appeared out of nowhere had quickly become like a little sister to him.
Then, he met Adris and Aeryn, with their two foals. He was more confident then, readily accepting them into his and Hinata's little pair. Hinata had been... displeased about it, at first, but she got over it. Mercury was proud of himself. After a few years of bachelor life, he finally had a bona fide herd. Sure, raising two foals wasn't exactly his strong suit, but they had their mothers, and he would protect them like his own! Adris was sweet, and Aeryn... tolerated him as her lead stallion. He had thought it would be fine. When winter arrived, it sunk its claws deep into the valley. Food became scarce, and Mercury soon realized the true pressure that his father must have been under. Finding suitable shelter and places that had enough food for them all was becoming increasingly more difficult. The larger herds had claimed their winter grounds already, and the places he normally roamed in the winter time didn't provide enough food for more than one horse. Times were growing tough, and he could feel himself cracking under the immense stress.
A blizzard had hit unexpectedly, and he could sense Aeryn's displeasure. He had insisted they find better grazing grounds when a small group of bachelors had wandered into the area they had been staying at. Aeryn had insisted they stay, but Mercury had insisted. He thought that lead mare might yell at him when Adris came to comfort her friend. Bristling, the paint mare had finally agreed. Thanks to Mercury's decision, they were now lost in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a blizzard. The lead mare trudged through the deep snow, Taron at her hip. Adris was close behind, head low to help shelter her young filly, Igni from the storm. Mercury trudged a ways off, trying to avoid the angry gaze of his lead mare with Hinata at his side. The filly had been silent, but he had spotted her glaring back at Aeryn. He was convinced Hinata had bigger cojones that he did.
The tension was palpable in the herd, and it did little to help Mercury's self esteem. He was failing his herd, and he knew it. The mares weren't too skinny, but he had been painfully aware of how little Igni lagged behind her mother. Was that his fault? Was it because he had failed to find them adequate food and shelter? They were only a few weeks into winter, how could he expect to care for them in the long months ahead of them. Shame rose up within him, weighing heavy on his shoulders and heart. Life had been so simple when it was just him and Hinata, but now.. he wasn't sure that he could care for her, even if it was just the two of them.
There had been a thought lingering in the back of his mind. He had been pushing it off for some time now, but with the snow blowing in his eyes and hunger starts to gnaw at his stomach, he finally considered it. He could hand the mares off to someone more capable than him. Perhaps an already established herd would be able to better care for the mares and their foals. An already established herd would offer Hinata a more stable family life. Isn't that what she deserved?
His breath puffed out in a cloud of white steam as he returned his mind to the present. If he found a suitable herd, he'd suggest it. With the way Aeryn had been glaring at him, he was sure she'd agree to it. With another huff, he lowered his head down and pushed on into the storm. With another swirl of white, the herd disappeared into the storm.
