"Watch your mouth, Hinata!" Aeryn snapped, pinning her ears at the filly in front of her. The foal's ears were pinned back against her neck, and her tail lashed wildly. The blizzard winds buffeted her fur in the storm, but she steadfast in the mare's way.

"You're not my mother, I don't have to listen to you," she spat, raising her head in defiance.

"And you're not my child. Know your place, filly," Aeryn said, snapping her teeth at the young mare's face. She didn't want to resort to violence, especially not against an orphaned filly like Hinata. She really did care for the filly, but she was misguided if she thought that she would let her push her around. She was the lead mare of this herd, regardless of what she or Mercury thought. "If you don't learn some respect, you're going to have a rough time in your next herd-"

"Next herd? Why would I need another one when I have Mercury to take care of me? You're the one who should be worried about finding your next herd. Who would want an old, bossy nag like you?" Hinata said, venom dripping from her voice. Aeryn squealed and ran her body into Hinata's frame, sending the young girl stumbling away.

"If you really think that stupid bachelor can take care of you, you're going to have another thing coming. He can't even take care of himself!" She yelled as a particularly strong gust swept by, nearly stealing her voice away. Behind her, she felt the gentle brush of Taron, he foal hiding under her tail. Adris came up to her side, bumping her shoulder with her muzzle.

"Aeryn, go easy on the girl-"

"No. She wants to be disrespectful, she can see what it's like to be without the warmth of the herd for a night," Aeryn hissed, sending the filly another withering look before she turned away, back to where Mercury was resting with Igni. They-, no she, had managed to find shelter in a shallow cave. Mercury had been of little use finding shelter in the storm. It had been all up to her to lead them through the storm, and with every passing hour, she was regretting giving this stallion a chance to lead them. Bristling with irritation, she trudged into the cave. It was hardly warmer than the air outside, but it was a haven from the blowing wind and ice.

Her eyes met the stallion's in the dark of the cave, and she saw the same regret she felt mirrored in his eyes. She opened her mouth to speak to him, but her eyes dropped to sleeping form of Igni, resting by his side. She shook her head and turned away, dropping to her knees to sleep in the darkest corners of the cave. Her anger ebbed away as the muted light from outside dimmed, and she felt hot tears burn at the corners of her eyes. She heard Taron nicker, her baby's gentle muzzle brushing along her cheeks in an attempt to comfort her. A silent sob shook her shoulders and she pulled her baby close, nuzzling their downy soft fur.

"Momma? What's wrong? Did I-"

"Shh, it's not you sweetheart. Mommy just misses your daddy sometimes," she whispered. Taron buried their head in her neck and nodded.

"I miss him, too,"
