Description

It was unsettling the next few days. A solemn silence had fallen over the herd. There was no excitement. As the other mare’s due dates grew nearer, they became more restless around Achlys and Asphodel. Asphodel refused to stop searching for Deimos and had others she could rely on for support: Pandia, Olympia, Adikia, and the other pregnant mares. This wasn’t the case for Achlys.
Elysium and Eirene stayed mostly to themselves, and far away from the grieving mare. No one wanted to celebrate new life when a child had been lost so recently. Unlike the others, Adonis did not intend to isolate Achlys. He reached out to her and often asked her to accompany him on walks. It was a small token of normalcy, but it was all he could offer her. The appaloosa mare seemed grateful and took him up on every single offer.
On this particular day, Adonis and Achlys had strayed into the forest. Although days had passed, ash and smoke still hung in the air like a thick veil. The two walked in relative silence, listening to the birds chirp and enjoying each other’s company.
A soft cry startled Adonis and Achlys and the two stared at each other for a moment. Adonis slowly crept forward into the ashy forest, his ears swiveling to catch what had made the noise. He heard Achlys whisper a warning to him, but he continued onward. Slowly, he stepped forward into the clearing.
Across it he spotted a thorny bush, nearly unscathed by the flames, that was rustling and shaking. The young stallion flattened his ears and carefully approached. As he inched closer, the rattling of the limbs stopped. Adonis froze as a small figure leapt up from the bush and bounded over to him.
In front of him was a colt, his body littered with tiny cuts and covered in soot and ash. The two young horses stared at each other for a moment before the bay roan reached forward and brushed his nose against Adonis’.
“Who-”
“Elias,” The colt said, awestruck by the stallion in front of him.
“Adonis, are you alright?” He whipped his head around to face the mare who gasped and stared at the colt. The mare and foal locked eyes and Elias stumbled over to her, burying his face into the mare’s neck.
Achlys and Adonis looked at each other in shocked silence. He stared at her, uncertain how she would react. Would she lash out at the foal? Chase it off? Break down?
Before he could say a word, tears fell from appaloosa mare’s eyes and she nuzzled Elias.
“It’s okay. You’re home,”

Achlys and Adonis looked at each other in shocked silence. He stared at her, uncertain how she would react. Would she lash out at the foal? Chase it off? Break down?
Before he could say a word, tears fell from appaloosa mare’s eyes and she nuzzled Elias.
“It’s okay. You’re home,”
