Description You know, as much as I love studio ghibli, i have done very little ghibli art.

So... i didn't really know how zines work. I applied for this zine thing on tumblr and drew this before I knew whether i was accepted. I found out later that it was in the wrong dimensions, so I was like "shit." Luckily though I didn't get accepted so I didn't have to feel compelled to redraw/add to it.

The story behind it: I was reading Hayao Miyazaki's concept book for Laputa, and he mentioned that originally, Sheeta was going to be the daughter of pirates. And she had like a gun and stuff. I thought that was like the coolest idea in the world. What I drew here is Sheeta post-movie, where maybe it's been a while and she decided that she liked the adventurous lifestyle that pirates held, so she went back to Dola's gang and Dola basically adopted her. And yeah the way she's holding the broken bottle as if it's supposed to be slung over her shoulder is a little awkward, I realize it now, but I wanted it to be visible at least. And I tried to position the dove (y'all remember those doves? i think everyone has that phase as a kid where they're crushed because they found out that controlling birds using music is a lot harder than it appears) so that it looked like she had a wing, like in that Tezuka movie Metropolis, also because Miyazaki really loves wings and bird symbolism.

The broken bottle could be alternately interpreted as being held like a back-up weapon at the height that would reach her opponent. That way, that posing decision will still have not been wasted. Other than that, your drawing such a concept at all, and in such a format, is a triumph of courage. I do hope you will get published in another zine, and now have the experience with which to remember to plan ahead what dimensions to work in based on instructions given to you before you start drawing and how to adjust your contributions accordingly.

I thought this was young Dola.

Well she did say Sheeta was like her when she was younger.

If there was ever a sequel to Laputa, this is the Sheeta I'd love to see in it, I wouldn't want to mess with her!  Great artwork, thanks for uploading!

Sheeta in the movie is nice (and strong in her own quiet way), but I love your take on the character! I think this illustration is very Miyazaki in style and spirit, and the colors are beautiful.
After all,  Dola did say that Sheeta reminded her of herself when she was younger

Thank you so much!! haha yeah I always like to imagine that Sheeta kind of grows up to take on Dola's role and personality. It's also equally as interesting to think that Dola was once a lot like Sheeta. I wish we knew more about Dola's backstory.
