Description Concept Art for David Weinstein's Azureus Rising.
Please visit the website and check out the final proof of concept shortfilm!

[link]

I worked as art director/concept artist on this and created the designs for the scorpion tank, flying drone, cars, architecture and gun turrets and also painted key frames.

Scorpion Tank concept, this went through a couple versions before it was finalized. The actual model in the shortfilm has different, improved pincers and tail gun.
Sorry, very simple shading without textures.

I don't mean to intrude...but this concept reminds of the last scene of Empire Earth. Watch this all the way to the end.Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=nz2_Mu… [Around 2:31 is when its past doppleganger shows up.]

Did you have some outside inspiration? Or was it a delayed memory [from playing the game?] I mean no disrespect. It is a good concept.Β

lol
I don't play video games actually. And I don't know the game or the video.
If anything, this tank was inspired by the scorpion tank from GITS. It's a very overused concept anyway- tank with multiple legs.
Nothing original about it in the first place

Ah...another point. But the Empire Earth one is older.

Hmm...now has anyone done a mantis tank...now we are talking.Β

I was completely blown away by that film!

Now that I think if it, this mecha-scorpion should've rang a bell when I remember that old mecha painting video tutorial of yours back at Divx Stage 6.

I like how you kept the general "scorpion" idea, but managed to look it as a beliveable construction, specially the more round shapes that still keep a "artificial" look, very well done.

Antaria-Nova [2010-05-21 06:49:11 +0000 UTC]

Really cool and great design.
I'd just like it to have missile pods at the sides of the base of the tail.
They'd fit in nicely, and you could have them fold away under the "belly" of it.
And in case those plates with 6 holes that are close to the middle of the tank are missile launchers, maybe you could still add those other pods.
You can never have too much firepower.
Heavy weapons FTW!
Faved.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hideyoshi In reply to Antaria-Nova [2010-05-21 17:14:49 +0000 UTC]

yup, those 6 hole areas are rocket launchers. In the video the tank actually fires from those
More would have overloaded this thing I believe. It was meant to look agile as well.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Antaria-Nova In reply to Hideyoshi [2010-05-23 11:40:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh, and you COULD probably add those pods i mentioned. They could - as I said - fold away into the tank or underneath it, so they don't hinder the movement in any way, and so they are less likely to be the target of enemy fire while not in use.
And ofc they would add some extra firepower, to make it just that little extra more dealy an adversary.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Antaria-Nova In reply to Hideyoshi [2010-05-23 11:34:04 +0000 UTC]

Actually, i watched the video and there those plates were hatches from where missile launchers with only 3 "slots"/holes each emerged. And the tail wasn't the kind of laser cannon you had designed, but rather a cooler and more fitting version (more fitting in terms of the overall design), aswell as the gatling-guns it had ont its forward arms were replaced with 3-fingered grasping arms with shorter gun-barrels set within the "palm".

Very cool vid.
And i saw your seeker drone in action too.
And noticed your name in the end credits.
Nice going.

Am i right when guessing Azureus is the name of that azure-haired champion that bounced around the city?

Hideyoshi In reply to Antaria-Nova [2010-05-23 12:13:08 +0000 UTC]

lol actually you just repeated what I had stated in my description about the design changes in the final tank design...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Antaria-Nova In reply to Hideyoshi [2010-05-24 15:27:27 +0000 UTC]

Ha.

Well, you still could add those missile pods...

Oh, you could make another "light" version of the scorpion tank, and make it be rocket artillery, or just general artillery, or like a sniper.
Damn, I want to be a designer on some game team. :/
I can easily come up with nice ideas and stuff.

So I have to ask; did the Tachikomas from Ghost in the Shell have any influence in the design? It has that same kind of style, but perhaps that just comes with the idea of a walking tank.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hideyoshi In reply to ArtOfAnrach [2010-05-21 17:13:06 +0000 UTC]

oh surely, the whole thing was intentionally influenced by GITS I'd say.
